THE CHRISTIAN VIEW OF THE SIGNS OF THE END TIMES

It is said that our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) predicted in the hadiths what would happen in the world during the End Times before Judgment Day. When we look at today’s events in the light of the hadiths and the explanations of Islamic scholars, we realize that the period we are living in is the End Times. According to the hadiths, this period will be a Golden Age in which the world will experience the ascendancy of Islamic morality under the leadership of Mahdi, Jesus (pbuh) will come to the Earth for the second time and gather the People of the Book together in a period of abundance, blessing and wealth. When we look at the parts of Christian holy scripture that predict that the signs of the End Times are nearly complete, we see an important parallel between them and the hadiths of our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).

At various times, Almighty Allah has sent messengers and books to human beings to show them the right path. Because of this, people have been aware since Adam’s (pbuh) time of Allah’s existence and commands and have found the best and wisest solutions for life’s problems in revealed religions.

Even though revealed religions contained decrees that varied according to the conditions and the environments of the periods in which they were sent, they presented to people the same model of belief and morality. They all declared to people the same basic truths about Allah’s existence and unity, His qualities, the purpose of the creation of human beings and other living things, how one must become Allah’s servant and live so as to earn His favor, how to live and act, the concepts of good, evil, truth and falsehood, how people should order their lives in this world, and what one must do to have eternal life.

But, in the course of time, Judaism and Christianity underwent some corruption and certain superstitious beliefs and legends entered their holy scripture. But still, when we look at the books of these two religions in the light of the Qur’an, we see that many true beliefs and moral values proper to revealed religion have survived intact. These beliefs and values are those held in common by all three revealed religions.

When we look at these common beliefs, we find that many Christians believe in the End Times when Jesus (pbuh) will return to Earth for the second time. These Christians believe, based on their own scripture, that the signs of the End Times have occurred one by one and that Jesus’ (pbuh) second coming is near. In this regard, it is stated in the New Testament as thus:

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us," they said, "when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age? Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am Jesus,’ and will deceive many.” (Matthew 24:3-5)

Here are some of the remarkable examples of similarity between the signs described in Christian scripture and the hadiths:

THE APPEARANCE OF FALSE PROPHETS AND MESIAHS:

For many will come in my name, claiming, “I am Jesus,” and will deceive many. (Matthew, 24:5)

and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. (Matthew, 24:11)

Recently Jim Jones, David Koresh and many other individuals have claimed to be the Messiah. According to Christian interpretation, these false prophets will be the prelude for the coming of the last false prophet-the Antichrist. In the hadiths, our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) alludes to this event:

The Last Hour will not come before there come forth thirty Dajjals (imposters), each presenting himself as an apostle of Allah. (Abu Dawud)

WARS

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. (Matthew 24:6)

In the End Times, there will be reports of wars and conflicts in all parts of the world. These events will become more frequent in the End Times and Christians interpret this as a sign.

Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. (Matthew 24:7)

More lives were lost in wars in the 20th century than at any other time in history. The use of weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical and biological) was predicted both in Christian scriptures and in the hadiths.

At a time when the world will be in harj [utter confusion and disorder], fitna will appear, people will be attacked…(Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi `Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir az-Zaman, p. 12)

FAMINES

Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. (Matthew 24:7)

In countries like Ethiopia and Sudan, famine has been a problem for years and has caused the death of people of all ages. According to the report of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization of the year 2000, 826 million people are undernourished. In other words, one in every six people in the world is hungry. This is acknowledged both in Islamic sources and by Christians as being a harbinger of the End Times. Famines and the spread of poverty are mentioned in the hadiths as signs of the End Times:

The poor will grow in number. (Amal al-Din al-Qazwini, Mufid al-`Uulum wa Mubid al-Humum)

…there will be exceedingly stressful days and hunger will rule. (Muhammad ibn `Abd ar-Rasul Barzanji, Al-Isha`ah li Ashrat as-Sa`ah, p. 220.)

EARTHQUAKES AND NATURAL DISASTERS

Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. (Matthew 24:7)

Of course, there have always been earthquakes in the history of the world, but, as Christians believe, the number will increase as Jesus’ (pbuh) return comes near. The frequency of violent earthquakes in the last few years puts them high up in public awareness. According to data released by the American National Earthquake Center in 1999, there were 20,832 earthquakes of small or great magnitude in the world. An estimated 22,711 individuals lost their lives in these earthquakes. When we look at the past, there were far fewer earthquakes; according to a report of the United States Geological Society (USGS), in the approximately 400 years between the 1556 and 1975, there were only 110 whose magnitude was 5.0 or more. The same society reports that, in the 23 years between 1980 and 2003, 1685 earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.5 and greater occurred. Certainly, these figures show plainly that there has been an increase in the incidence of earthquakes since the prophet’s time 1400.

Since the 1990’s countless tropical storms, hurricanes and tornadoes have occurred and winds have reached speeds of more than 200 mph. The hadiths say that natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes are signs of the End Times:

The Hour (Last Day) will not be established until ... earthquakes will be very frequent. (Bukhari)

There are two great hadiths before the Day of Judgment... and then years of earthquakes. (Narrated by Umm Salama (ra))

THE SPREAD OF HERETICAL PHILOSOPHIES

Christians believe that there will be an alienation from the Christian faith in the Last Days. Many denominations will abandon the basic teachings of the gospel in favor of New Age practices, eastern religions, meditation, reincarnation, astrology, communicating with the dead, idolatry and magic.

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. (1 Timothy, 4:1-3)

This situation is mentioned in the hadiths:

…all of the prohibitions are regarded as lawful (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 23.)

The Hour will come when people will believe in the stars and reject Qadar [the Divine Decree of destiny]. (Al-Haythami, Kitab al-Fitan)

THE RAPID SPREAD OF EVIL-DOING

Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold. (Matthew, 24:12)

The cruelty, terrorism, murders, assaults, cheating, drug use, torture, alcoholism, robbery, resentment, rebellions and homosexuality that characterizes our time has become excessively widespread. Christian scripture says that this is a sign of the End Times:

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, (2 Timothy, 3:1-3)

When we look at the hadiths concerning the End Times, we read the following of this process of rapid degeneration:

There will be years of deceit, in which a truthful person will be disbelieved and a liar will be believed. (Ibn Kathir)

The Hour (Last Day) will not be established until murders will increase. (Bukhari)

SIGNS IN THE SUN AND IN THE STARS

There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars… (Luke, 21:25)

According to Christian scripture, this sign that will be seen in the sun maybe the huge explosion that happened in the 20th century. The solar eclipse of August 11, 1999, was the last total eclipse of the 20th century. This was the first time that so many people had the opportunity to witness an eclipse that lasted for so long. It is interesting that Turkey was one of the countries where this eclipse could be seen in its totality. It could be seen in 12 cities and 100 provinces from Bartin to Silopi. The words of our Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in the hadiths ‘There will be a sign from the sun.’ may refer to this event. (Allah knows the truth).

All this shows that signs of the End Times are recorded in Islam and in Christian scripture and there is the expectation of a savior and Messiah. The End Times is a holy period in which religious morality will govern the Earth, Islam will return to its essence and be widely practiced under the leadership of Mahdi; it will also be a period in which the Christian world will participate in this continual rule of morality through the agency of Jesus (pbuh). This period will end with the coming of the Golden Age. In this regard, Christian scripture says:

When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. (Luke, 21:28)

In the Qur’an, Almighty Allah announces to all believers the reign of this moral goodness:

Allah has promised those of you who believe and do right actions that He will make them successors in the land as He made those before them successors, and will firmly establish for them their religion with which He is pleased and give them, in place of their fear, security. “They worship Me, not associating anything with Me.” Any who do not believe after that, such people are deviators. (Surat an-Nur, 55)

IN THE LIGHT OF THE HADITHS OF OUR PROPHET (SAAS), WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE MIDDLE EAST IN THE END TIMES?

The Middle East is the most important of the regions referred to by our Prophet (saas) in the context of events that will take place in the end times. Indeed, the majority of the portents described in the hadiths have happened in the Middle East. In addition, there are a great many other accounts from our Prophet (saas) regarding the region. Looked at in general, the common feature of these accounts is that the chaos, strife, and major events in the lands of the Middle East will continue until the appearance of the Mahdi. Throughout history, the Middle East, which includes such cities as Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, Damascus, Baghdad, and Istanbul, has been a region in which the holy prophets of Allah have lived, one which witnessed the birth of the three monotheistic religions, and a holy region in which the sacred sites of all three religions were built. It is reported in hadiths that a region that has always played a leading role on the stage of history will also come to the fore in the end times, when glorious events will take place.
The Middle East, which includes such countries as present-day Iraq, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, and parts of Turkey, has been enormously valuable throughout history, both in terms of its strategic location and material wealth and also because of its spiritual aspect and importance for the three monotheistic religions.
By the leave of Allah, our Prophet (saas) has described the portents of the End Times in considerable detail in the hadiths. According to the information contained in these, following the chaos and corruption that will constitute the first stage of the End Times, Almighty Allah will make one of His servants who bears the illustrious name of the Mahdi (he who leads to the truth) a means whereby societies that have turned away from proper moral values and suffered degeneration return to the true path. The Mahdi will collect the Islamic world under the same roof and will be the reason for dominance of the values of the Qur’an all over the world by serving with ‘Isa (as) who will return to the Earth for the second time. By the will of Allah, the time when these glad tidings will become a reality is close at hand. Believers are waiting for those days, which will be one of the most special and the most glorious periods in the history of the world, with great joy and excitement.
If events that are currently taking place are carefully analyzed and evaluated in the light of verses from the Qur’an and the hadiths, it will be seen that the first stage of the End Times has already begun. The increasing war and conflict, terror, violence, anarchy and chaos, killing, torture, and moral degeneration are just a few of the portents revealed in the hadiths.
At the same time, this state of affairs is an encouragement to all believers to reflect deeply on the portents of the End Times revealed in the hadiths and to carry out detailed investigations into the subject.
In this article, we shall be discussing a region that is frequently mentioned in the hadiths about the End Times and an area that will come to the fore in a most striking manner in events to take place in the future, in other words, the MIDDLE EAST.
According to the information in the hadiths, this region known as the Middle East will witness many events before the coming of Prophet ‘Isa (as) and the appearance of the Mahdi. Indeed, it also appears from the hadiths that a great many developments will take place in these lands after the appearance of these two holy individuals. On the other hand, the Middle East has always played host to significant events, and is a special region that has been an important centre for the revealed religions and is home to a great many prophets. In the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) there are also indications that, as in the past, the region will be an important centre in the End Times. (Allah knows the truth.)
The Middle East Has Been an Important Centre in Many Regards throughout the Course of History
For example, the fact that some two-thirds (65.3%) of the world’s oil reserves and a little more than one third (36.1%) of the world’s known natural gas reserves are in the Middle East, is an indication why the region is so financially important. Because of this attractiveness, it has witnessed many wars, struggles, and power games.
When we look at the region’s past, another important fact we encounter is that the area known as the Middle East contains a number of cities that have always been in the eyes of the world. One of the most striking examples of this is Jerusalem. This city, of such great spiritual importance, has witnessed a great many wars and has been ruled by many different administrations. Recently, Jerusalem is on the world public agenda. The city, of such importance to the three monotheistic religions, also acquires a whole new significance in this regard.
Another important example is the city of Constantinople, or Istanbul as it is known today. This valuable city, which so many states wished to possess over the course of history, was eventually captured by the Ottomans. It remained the centre of government for the Ottoman Empire, which is still talked about today because of the positive effects it has had on a number of world states, for around 500 years; Istanbul still maintains its historic mission today, with its geographical and strategic importance and also its historical and cultural legacy. In addition, the fact that the caliphate, by which the Ottomans were the standard-bearers of the Islamic world for centuries, finally ended up in this city and that the sacred relics, determined as an indication of where the Mahdi will appear, are also in the city increases its importance still further. It is also stated in the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) that Istanbul will witness other great events in the End Times.
Another important centre in the Middle East is that generally referred to as Sham in the hadiths and is the region that includes, by its etymological meaning, the cities of Mecca and Medina. As we know, millions of Muslims visit the region every year to fulfill the obligation of the Hajj and to see the holy lands in which our Prophet (saas) lived. We may say, in the light of the hadiths, that this region, the symbol and centre of Islam, will play an important role in the End Times.
Again considering the Middle East in general terms, the region is one in which many holy emissaries of the Almighty Allah have lived and communicated our Lord’s commands. Many centers of worship sacred to Muslims, Jews, and Christians are also to be found here. In addition, these sacred spots, in which the holy emissaries preached Allah’s message, also witnessed many miraculous events in the past. As in the past, this region will be a very important centre in the End Times, which may be described as the glorious period in world history. (Allah knows the truth.) Indeed, the eyes of the world today are on the significant developments taking place in the area. Both the Great Middle East Project and the region of the Iraq War constantly represent the world public agenda.
The Prophet Muhammad (saas) was born in Mecca, and the Holy Qur’an was also revealed to him there. The knowledge of secret matters imparted to our Prophet (saas) by Allah are some of his greatest miracles, and some of this information, which has come down to us by way of the hadiths, concerns events that will take place in the End Times. Indeed, when we look at the period we are living in, it is clear that the events in question have taken place and are still taking place in our own time.
THE MIDDLE EAST: Home of the Prophets
When we look at the information concerning the prophets in the Qur’an we see that the great majority of them began communicating their message in the region known as the Middle East. This has led to the region also being known as the home of the prophets. This region where many prophets lived, where they were guided to the true path and witnessed many miracles is now home to many people in the modern days.
The following is to briefly review some of the events related to the prophets:
- Prophet Nuh (as) communicated his message to the people in the area known as Mesopotamia. The Ark that Allah commanded him to build came to rest on Mount Cudi, in the same region, following the Flood.
- Prophet Ibrahim (as) began building the Kaaba in the city of Mecca, together with his son, Prophet Isma’il, (as) at Allah’s command. The people wanted to kill Prophet Ibrahim (as) by throwing him into the fire, but the Almighty Allah commanded the fire to turn cold.
- Prophet Lut (as), who lived in the same period as Prophet Ibrahim (as), communicated his message to the people living near the present-day Lake Lut, otherwise known as the Dead Sea. These people, who had no faith and who continued to do things that Allah had forbidden them, were destroyed by Him, and our Lord made this destruction a deterrent lesson for people of all times.
- The people of Israel, who left Egypt with Prophet Musa (as) and lived for a time as nomads, adopted a settled way of life in Jerusalem in the time of Prophet Dawud (as).
- After Prophet Dawud (as), Prophet Sulayman (as) built one of the most magnificent buildings in the history of the world, the Temple of Sulayman, in Jerusalem. The fact that jinns and devils were placed at his command, the way he spoke with birds and other animals, and the way he commanded copper and the wind are some miracles of Prophet Sulayman (as); they are blessings from our Lord which people witnessed in Prophet Sulayman (as).
- Prophet ‘Isa (as) was born in Nazareth, an area close to Jerusalem. He preached his message in this region and performed many miracles through the special knowledge imparted to him by Allah. It is similarly revealed in the hadiths that Prophet ‘Isa’s (as) return to Earth will take place in this region.
- The Prophet Muhammad (saas) was born in Mecca, and the Holy Qur’an was also revealed to him there.
The Portents of the Start of the End Times Have Manifested Themselves in the Middle East
As was stated at the beginning of this article, the End Times are described in considerable detail in the hadiths. Sometimes information has been provided as to where events will take place, and sometimes a specific time or date has been given. When these signs are closely monitored, it can be seen that the Middle East is the region where just about all of these special events will materialize. Some of the events that the hadiths tell us will occur before the appearance of Prophet ‘Isa (as) and the Mahdi; they are as follows:
The Iran-Iraq War
One hadith describes a major war that will be waged in the End Times:
A people will come from the direction of Faris (Iran), and will say: ‘O, Arabians! You have become too fanatical! If you do not recognize their rights properly, nobody will unite with you … One day let it be given to you, and one day to them, and let these mutual promises be kept…’ They will go to Mutik (the name of a mountain in the region), and Muslims will descend from there to Yazi (the Iranian Plain) … The polytheists will stand on the other side by the banks of the pitch black river known as the Rakabe (an area rich in oil wells) … There will be war between them: Allah will withhold the victory from both armies. (Portents of Doomsday, Barzanji, p. 179)
Let us consider the details of the hadith:
- Who will come from the direction of Faris? Who will come from Iran?
- Faris: Iran, Iranian
- They will descend to Yazi: The Iranian Plain
- Mutik: The name of a mountain in the region
- Rakabe: A region with many oil wells
Allah will withhold the victory from both armies...
As this hadith indicates, the Iran-Iraq War lasted for eight years and cost many thousands of lives, though it produced no definitive result. Neither side was able to impose a definite superiority.
The Invasion of Afghanistan
It is a great sorrow for Talikan (Afghanistan). It is certain that Allah has treasures there that are not of gold and silver. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 59)
The hadith indicates that Afghanistan will be occupied in the End Times. Indeed, the Russian invasion of Afghanistan took place in 1979, or Hijri 1400; to put it another way, this came at the beginning of the 14th century according to the Hijri calendar.
Treasures there that are not of gold and silver...
This part of the description refers to the mineral wealth of Afghanistan. Large oil beds, iron reserves, and coal mines that have not been worked for various reasons have today been identified in Afghanistan.
The Attack on and Shedding of Blood in the Kaaba
The year when he appears, people will go on the Hajj with no leader at their head … They will head for the Kaaba together, then when they descend to Mine they will attack one another like dogs, pilgrims will be robbed, and blood will flow over the Jemre road. (Portents of Doomsday, Berzenci, p. 168-169)
By the expression, “The year when he appears…” in this hadith, it draws attention to the fact that there will be a massacre during the Hajj when the Mahdi appears. Such a massacre took place in 1979 in the attack on the Kaaba during the Hajj. This bloody attack on the Kaaba took place at the beginning of the period of the beginning of the End Times and when other portents of the coming of the Mahdi occurred. In other words, this occurred on 1 Muharrem 1400, on the first day of 1400 according to the Hijri calendar.
The Stopping of the Waters of the Euphrates
Among the portents of the Mahdi is the stopping of the waters of the Euphrates. Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 39)
Indeed, the Keban Dam did stop the flow of the waters of the River Euphrates.
The prophet of Allah (saas) said: Doomsday will not come until a mountain of gold arises from the waters of the River Euphrates… (3) (Riyazu’s Salihin, 3/332)
The Keban Dam and other dams constructed on the River Euphrates are reminiscent of giant mountains. These dams produce wealth worth that of gold (from the mountain, according to the analogy in the hadith). Therefore, these dams are like “a mountain of gold.” (Allah knows the truth.) In addition, it was recently established using satellites that there are gold beds under the River Euphrates, which may be pointing to another meaning in the hadith. (Allah knows the truth.)
The Killing of Rulers in Sham and Egypt
Before that, rulers in Sham and Egypt will be killed… (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar p. 49)
This hadith refers to the killing of rulers in Sham and Egypt before the coming of the Mahdi. When the recent history of Egypt is examined, it can be seen that a ruler was indeed killed, just as reported in the hadith. Enver Sadat, who assumed power in Egypt in 1970 and remained in power for 11 years, was assassinated during an official march-past in 1981.
Current Events in the Middle East Confirm the Hadiths
When one looks at recent developments in the Middle East, one can see a close compatibility with the accounts given in the hadiths. The most striking example in this regard is the Iraq War and the events, in the region, that accompany it. We wish to make it clear at this point that the disagreements, wars, torture, and slaughter in the region will come to an end with the appearance of the Mahdi, and that with the return of Prophet ‘Isa (as), Qur’anic moral values will, by Allah’s leave, prevail all over the world. The days when injustice will be replaced by truth and justice, torture and war will be replaced by peace and tolerance, and perverted and atheistic ideologies will be replaced by Islam marks the point when the true religion of Islam will be very close at hand. Some hadiths that refer to developments that have taken place in the region over recent years read as follows:
The Destruction of Baghdad by Fire
In the End Times Baghdad will be destroyed by flames... (Risalat al-Khuruj al-Mahdi, vol. 3, p. 177)
From the first day of the Iraq war in 2003, Baghdad was a city exposed to the heaviest bombing, which caused the city to burn at night just as described in the hadith. Images of Baghdad in newspaper and television reports are totally compatible with the burning described in the above hadith.
Chaos in Sham, Iraq, and Arabia
The Prophet (saas) said: “…There will be such troubles and calamities that nobody will have a place to shelter from them. These calamities will travel around Sham and settle over Iraq. They will bind the Arabian Peninsula…As they attempt to eliminate these calamities in one place they will arise again in another. (Kenzul Ummal, Book of Some Thoughts on Doomsday, Vol. 5, p. 38-39)
The Restructuring of Iraq
...Doomsday will not take place until Iraq is attacked. And innocent people will seek places to shelter in Sham. Sham will be reconstructed and Iraq will be reconstructed. (Kenzul Ummal, Book of Some Thoughts on Doomsday, Vol. 5, p. 254)
The hadith points to the restructuring of Iraq. A great many Iraqi cities were devastated, first in the Iran-Iraq War, then in the Gulf War, and finally in the Iraq War of 2003. The effects of the looting that took place after this war also made the restructuring of the country, which had been completely ruined, essential.
The Division of Iraq into Three Parts
The people of Iraq will be divided into three groups. One part will join the looters. One part will leave their families behind and flee. One part will fight and be killed. Prepare yourselves for doomsday when you see this. (Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar)
According to the information provided in this hadith, one part of the people will join the “looters.” Major acts of looting, taking advantage of the authority vacuum, were indeed experienced in Iraq. The hadith also relates how another part of the people will prefer to flee at once, unable even to consider the families they leave behind. Newspaper reports on this subject are noteworthy. A third part of the people, we are told, will join in the fighting and be killed. During the Iraq War, some people did join in the clashes in various regions and lost their lives.
Future Developments in the Middle East in the Light of the Hadiths
It is clear that the great majority of the portents that our Prophet (saas) tells us will take place in the Middle East, and that the End Times have already come about. There are also many other accounts from our Prophet (saas) concerning this region. Looked at in general, the striking point about these is that chaos, strife, and major events will continue until the appearance of the Mahdi. One of the hadiths in question states as follows:
As the strife calms down in one place in Sham, it will rise up in another. The strife will not end until angels calls out from the sky “The Mahdi is your leader. The Mahdi is your caliph. (Mustafa Resit Filizi, Treatise on the Coming of the Mahdi, p. 63)
It appears from the hadith that there will be terrible chaos in Sham before the coming of the Mahdi, who will appear on Earth together with Prophet ‘Isa (as). As has already been mentioned, the word “Sham” in Arabic means “left,” and has been used since very early times to refer to those countries to the left of the Hijaz region (the region containing the cities of Mecca and Medina). Therefore, this hadith is indicating that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East region will sometimes die down and sometimes flare up again, and that it will only come to a complete end with the appearance of the Mahdi. (Allah knows the truth.)
The events that will be experienced in the Middle East will not consist of chaos, conflict, and war alone. Following his appearance, the Mahdi will unite the great majority of the countries in this region and be a means whereby a very powerful economic and political union is established. The Mahdi will meet with Prophet ‘Isa (as) in this region and they will pray together. The Mahdi will unearth the Ark of the Covenant and the sacred relics. We may say, in the light of hadiths and of accounts by Islamic scholars, that a great many landmark events in the history of the world will take place in this region. (Allah knows the truth.) Some hadiths that refer to the events in question read:
The Coming of Prophet ‘Isa (as)
Allah will send ‘Isa (as) son of Maryam to Earth. He will descend with two angels wearing two beautiful garments in his palms to the white minaret in the east of Sham. (Tirmidhi, Fitan, p. 59)
Later, Prophet ‘Isa (as) will descend to the white minaret in the east of Damascus (Sham). The imam will withdraw, and Prophet ‘Isa (as) will go to the fore and lead the people in prayer.
(Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi, The Conquests of Mecca, 366. Vol. 3, p. 327)
The Appearance of the Mahdi
An army bearing black standards will appear from the east, … when you see them, swear loyalty at once, even if you have to crawl over snow!” he said. “Because that is the Mahdi, the caliph of Allah.” (Ibn Majah; The Book of Strife, 4084)
The Swearing of Allegiance to the Mahdi
The caliphate will then come to the Mahdi, the most auspicious person on Earth, as he sits at home. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman p. 26)
Allegiance will be sworn to him between the Pillar and the Stone… (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 42)
The Mahdi will sit between the Pillar and the Stone and will accept oaths of allegiance by stretching out his hand. (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 39-40)
The Migration of the Mahdi
He will migrate to Jerusalem. After this emigration Medina will be destroyed and be the home of wild people. (Portents of Doomsday, Barzanji, p. 162)
They will wage war against the army of the Sufyan, but the Sufyan will be victorious. The Hashimite will flee. Shuaib bin Salih will hide and come to Jerusalem, and when the Mahdi reaches Sham he will prepare a house for him in Jerusalem. (Nuaym bin Hammad, Book of Strife, p. 57)
According to Nuaym, reported from Selman b. Isa: “The Mahdi will remain 14 years in Jerusalem… (Yusuf el-Makdisi, Fera Idu Fevaidi’l Fikr Fi’l Imam El-Mahdi El-Muntazar)
The Mahdi Will Unearth the Ark of the Covenant
He will unearth the Ark of the Covenant in the Antioch cave. He will unearth the true Torah from the mountain in Sham, and at this he will debate with the Jews and many Jews will become Muslims. (Treatise on the Coming of the Mahdi, p. 124-125)
The Mahdi will bring forth the Ark of the Covenant from the Lake of Tiberius. (Iqd al-Durar fi Akbar al-Imam al-Muntadhar, by Shaikh Jamaluddin Yusuf al-Damishqi, p. 51-)
The reason why he is known as the Mahdi is that he shows the path of a secret thing. He will unearth the Ark of the Covenant from a place known as Antioch. (Suyuti, al-Hawi li’l Fatawa, II, 82)
The Mahdi Will Create an Islamic Union
That individual’s (the Mahdi’s) third duty will be to join forces with Christian spiritual leaders and serve Islam by building a caliphate of Islam, an Islamic Union. (To unite Islamic society and make an alliance with the Christian world) (Book of Hidden Things, p. 9, Bediuzzaman Said Nursi)
The Appearance of the Mahdi with Sacred Relics
The Mahdi will appear in the evening time with the banner, shirt, sword, signs, light and pleasant speech of our Prophet (saas). (Ali b. Sultan Muhammed el- Kari el-Hanefi, ‘Risaletül Meşreb elverdi fi mezhebül Mahdi’)
He will produce the treasures of Jerusalem, the Ark of the Covenant, the table of the People of Israel and the tablets, the jacket of Prophet Adem (as), the staff of the Prophet Sulayman (as) and the milk-white gloves sent by Allah to the People of Israel.” (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 33)
The Mahdi’s spiritual capture of Istanbul
Allah will capture Constantinople (Istanbul) by the hand of His beloved friends … He will lift sickness and sorrow from them. (Portents of Doomsday, p. 181)
Countries will pass under his command. Allah will favor him with the capture of Constantinople. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 56)
It is reported from Ibni Amr that; Our Prophet (saas) said: O People! There are six things without which doomsday will not come … (the sixth is) the capture of the city.
- Which city? He was asked
Constantinople, he replied.
(*) This is the capture of Constantinople by the Mahdi. (Portents of Doomsday, 204, Ramuz-el Ehadis, 296)
The Appearance of the Dajjal
According to Abu Huraira, the Prophet (saas) said:
… The Dajjal will appear when they come to the land of Sham (Jerusalem). (Muslim, Strife, p. 34)
The Prayer to Be Performed by Prophet ‘Isa (as) and the Mahdi
The call is read for the morning prayer. At that point ‘Isa (as) son of Maryam will descend. The Mahdi will suggest he serve as imam. But he will point to the Mahdi.” (Muslim, Strife, p. 34)
In İmam Ebu Amr Osman b. Said El-Makarri’s “The Sunna:” according to a report by Jabir b. Abdullah, the Prophet (saas) said:
A group from my community will always wage war for the truth. Finally ‘Isa (as) son of Maryam will appear in Jerusalem at dawn. They will say to him: “O Prophet of Allah! Come to the fore and lead us in prayer.” He will reply: “This is such a community that some are appointed over others.”(Al-Uqayli, An-Najmu's-saqib fi Bayan Anna'l Mahdi min Awladi Ali b. Abu Talib Ale't-Tamam ve'l Qamal)
The Prophet ‘Isa (as) Will Destroy the Dajjal
…The Prophet ‘Isa (as) wishes to catch him. He finally catches and destroys him at the Gate of the city of Lut (Palestine).(Ibn Majah, Strife, p. 33)
Ebu Hureyre relates: The Prophet (saas) of Allah said: “… When the enemy of Allah (the Dajjal) sees Prophet ‘Isa (as) he will dissolve like salt dissolves in water. If let to himself he will dissolve until he is destroyed. However, Allah will kill him with his mighty hand, so that he will show them the blood on his spear. (Muslim, Strife, p. 34)
As it is clear from the above hadiths, different sources are in agreement on the same region. In all the hadith sources and the works of Islamic scholars, the common location indicated in the End Times is the Middle East. Jewish and Christian sources also confirm this.
There are a great many regions that can all be considered important from various points of view; however, there is only this particular region emphasized in all these sources. That fact is that the Middle East region, which contains cities so frequently referred to in the hadiths concerning the End Times, is a holy one in which the holy prophets of Allah have lived throughout the course of history. This region has witnessed the birth of the three monotheistic religions and, it is the location of constructed sites sacred to those three religions. It would seem, in the light of the hadiths of our Prophet (saas), that a region which has played such an important role on the stage of history will continue to maintain its importance in the End Times, when such momentous events will take place. One of the duties befalling us, witnesses to the End Times that have already begun, must be to impart these joyous tidings to all Muslims and to all humanity.
The events that will be experienced in the Middle East will not consist of chaos, conflict, and war alone. Following his appearance, the Mahdi will unite the great majority of the countries in this region and be a means whereby a very powerful economic and political union is established. The Mahdi will meet with the Prophet Isa in this region and they will pray together. The Mahdi will unearth the Ark of the Covenant and the sacred relics. We may say, in the light of hadiths and of accounts by Islamic scholars that a great many landmark events in the history of the world will take place in this region. (Allah knows best.)
A NEW AGE IN WORLD HISTORY IS DAWNING
By Allah’s leave, all the peoples of the world will soon witness the dawning of a new age. This age will be the GOLDEN AGE, when Qur’anic moral values prevail over the whole world, and thanks to which all forms of trouble, difficulty, and suffering will be replaced by peace, security, and abundance. Almighty Allah has imparted these glad tidings to His servants in the Qur’an:
Allah has promised those of you who believe and do right actions that He will make them successors in the land as He made those before them successors, and will firmly establish for them their religion with which He is pleased and give them, in place of their fear, security. 'They worship Me, not associating anything with Me.' Any who disbelieve after that, such people are deviators. (Surat al-Nur: 55)
All the troubles currently being experienced in the world are actually the heralds of this new age. All believers must remind one another of these glad tidings with great enthusiasm and excitement.
THE MIDDLE EAST IN BRIEF
The Permanent Commission on Geographical Names in Britain determined the concept of the Middle East to include Turkey, Egypt, the Arabian Peninsula, the Gulf region, Iran, and Iraq. Thus, the region stretching from the Bosphorus to the eastern shores of India, was named the Middle East in the early 20th century. (Roderic H. Davison, “Where Is The Middle East?”, Foreign Affairs, Vol. 38, New York 1959-1960. p. 669-671)
The name Jerusalem was first mentioned in a series of Akkadian documents written in cuneiform and discovered at El Amarna in Egypt. In these six tablets, which date back to around 1500 BC, reference is made to the city state of Ershalem (or Urshalem) in the region of Canaan. One of the Hebrew names for the city in subsequent years would be Yerushalem/Jerusalem. These names point to the same root in Akkadian and Hebrew (as well as in Arabic), which are both Semitic languages: slm, in other words, peace.
Jerusalem is the third holy city in Islamic belief after Mecca and Medina. Its full name is Kudus’us-Sherif (Blessed Kudus).
Jerusalem is a holy city in Islam both because it is a city in which prophets lived and also from the point of view of its being the first direction turned to by Muslims in prayer in the Age of Happiness. As we know, this was changed at Allah’s command (Surat al-Baqara: 144) to the mosque surrounding the Kaaba in Mecca (Masjid al-Haram) after the Hegira.
The following statement appears in the Holy Qur’an in reference to the return to Egypt of the Prophet Musa (as):
When Musa had fulfilled the appointed term and had set off with his family, he noticed a fire from one side of the Mount. He said to his family, ‘Stay here, I can see a fire. Hopefully I will bring you back some news from it or a burning branch from the fire so that you will be able to warm yourselves. But when he reached it a voice called out to him from the right hand side of the valley in the part which was full of blessing, from out of the bush: ‘Musa, I am Allah, the Lord of all the worlds’ (Surat al-Qasas: 29-30)
The holy region containing the Mountain Tur and valley indicated here is in Palestine.
One of the most important and valuable holy relics in Topkapı Palace, in Istanbul, is the banner of our Prophet Muhammad (saas), known as Ukab. This was brought to Istanbul with the conquest of Egypt by the Ottoman Sultan Selim the Stern. We are told in hadiths that it has never been unfurled since the death of our Prophet (saas) but that it will be opened up by the Mahdi in the End Times.
The present-day city of Istanbul took the name Constantinople after the Roman emperor Constantine in 325 AD.
The Ark of the Covenant is a valuable chest revealed in the Qur’an by our Almighty Lord and containing items belonging to Prophet Musa (as) and Prophet Harun (as). According to Islamic scholars, the most important feature of the Ark is that its whereabouts have been unknown since 587 BC, and scholars agree that it will be found by the Mahdi when he appears in the End Times. (Allah knows the truth.)
“Lake Tiberias,” which appears in the hadiths is regarded as a comparative term by Islamic scholars. Tiberias is near Sham, and Sham, in the accounts of those hadiths concerning the End Times, is a far-off place, and also bears the meaning of being far from Mecca and Madina. This comparison also applies to Tiberias. Indeed, based on this, some commentators and researchers have concluded that the Ark may be in Jerusalem, in Mecca, in Tiberias, or in Hatay, and it also points to it being in Istanbul.
The Kaaba is around 13 meters (42.65 ft) high, 12 meters (39.65 ft) wide and 11 meters (36.09 ft) deep. The Kaaba, in the direction of which all Muslims face in prayer, is the first holy place of worship built on Earth. It is also known as the Baituallah (the House of Allah) and the Ancient House. Almighty Allah states in the Qur’an: The first House established for humanity was that at Bakka, a place of blessing and a guidance for all beings. (Surah Al ‘Imran: 96)

PORTENTS OF DOOMSDAY THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE FROM 1979 TO 2006

Doomsday will be both the end of the life of this world and also the beginning of the eternal life of the Hereafter. The great might of Allah will be understood by everyone through the terrible events that will take place on Doomsday.

Fourteen hundred years ago, our Prophet Muhammad (saas) described the portents that would take place prior to Doomsday in detail in the hadiths. According to these, there will be war, anarchy, poverty, a rise in sexual degeneracy, and frequent natural disaster; in addition, people will turn away from proper moral values and false prophets will appear. Following all these, Allah will bring the moral values of the Qur’an to prevail over the whole world by means of the blessed Mahdi.

The most important proof of the truth of this information in the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) will be that when the time comes, these events will all transpire, one after the other, in exactly the way described (Allah knows best). Many of the signs revealed in the hadiths have already taken place, one after the other and in a very short space of time, in terms of world history, between 1979 and 2006.

What we need to do in order to understand these portents is to reflect carefully upon the verses of the Qur’an and the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) revealed 1400 years ago regarding Doomsday and the portents thereof. Our Lord makes the following promise in one verse:

Say: Praise be to Allah. He will show you His Signs and you will recognize them. Your Lord is not unaware of what you do.’ (Surat an-Naml, 93)

However, it is also important to make it clear that Allah knows the truth of all things. As in all other matters, we have no other knowledge about Doomsday than what He teaches us. Only Allah knows for certain when Doomsday will take place, although it most certainly will.

Say: ‘I do not know whether what you are promised is close or whether my Lord will appoint a longer time before it.’ He is the Knower of the Unseen, and does not divulge His Unseen to anyone. (Surat al-Jinn; 25, 26)

The Occupation of Afghanistan (1979)

Pity poor Taliqan (a region in Afghanistan) that at that place are treasures of Allah, but these are not of gold and silver but consist of people who have recognized Allah as they should have. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-zaman, p.59)

There is an indication that Afghanistan will be occupied during the Last Days. The Russian invasion of Afghanistan took place in 1979 (1400, according to the Islamic calendar).

The Fourth Peace and Arab-Israel Peace Agreement (1979)

There will be four [periods of] peace with you and people [in one copy, this is said to be the Greeks]. The fourth peace, which lasts for seven years, will be through a person from the people of Heraclius. (Kıyamet Alametleri, (Signs of the Doomsday) Osman Çataklı, (299/8)

This hadith mentions one of the signs of the Mahdi who will ally with Prophet ‘Isa (as) during his tenure on Earth. According to this sign, a fourth peace agreement will be signed between the Muslims and the non-Muslims, and this agreement will last for seven years. At the end of this period, the Mahdi will appear. According to the general conviction, this fourth peace-agreement is the Camp David agreement signed by the U.S., Israel, and Egypt, in 1979. (Allah knows best.)

Storming the Ka`ba and the subsequent bloodshed

People will perform hajj together and gather without an Imam. The Hajjis will be looted and there will be a battle at Mina in which many will be slain and blood will flow until it runs over the Jamra al-'Aqaba. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-Zaman, p. 35)

The phrase 'the year in which he will emerge' draws attention to a massacre that will occur on the date of the Mahdi's emergence. In 1979, a massacre very like this one occurred during the Ka'ba raid, which took place during the pilgrimage month. It is very interesting that this raid occurred at the very beginning of the period during which the signs of the Mahdi's advent appeared, that is, the first day of the Islamic year 1400 (21 November 1979).

The hadiths also mention bloodshed and massacres. The killing of 30 people during the clashes between Saudi soldiers and attacking militants during the raid confirms the rest of this hadith.

Iran Iraq War (1980)

There will be tumult in Shawwal (the tenth Islamic month), talks of war in Dhul-Qa`dah (the eleventh Islamic month), and the outbreak of war in Dhul-Hijjah (the twelfth month). (Allamah Muhaqqiq Ash-Sharif Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rasul, Al-Isaatu li Asrat'is-saat, p. 166)

These three months coincide with the months during which the Iran-Iraq war developed. The first uprising against the Shah took place on 5 Shawwal 1398 (8 September 1976), as indicated by the hadith. A full-blown war broke out between Iran and Iraq in Dhu al-Hijjah 1400 (October 1980).

An Increase in the Number of Earthquakes

The Hour (Last Day) will not be established until ... earthquakes will be very frequent. (Bukhari)

There are two great hadiths before the day of Judgment ... and then years of earthquakes. (Narrated by Umm Salama (r.a.)

In the last few years, major earthquakes have occurred repeatedly and are among the foremost fears of people around the world. If we look at the data collected by the American National Earthquake Information Center for 1999, we find out that 20,832 earthquakes happened in various locations around the world. As a result, an estimated 22,711 people lost their lives.

The 500,000 people who died in the Afghanistan and the Indonesian earthquakes are not included in those statistics.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports, the number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater on the Richter scale, that took place during the 400 years between 1556-1975, was only 110; between 1980-2003, the number of earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.5 or greater on the Richter scale was 1,685. These figures reveal that the number of earthquakes had increased by the beginning of the year Hijri 1400.

The Killing of the Ruler of Egypt (1981)

Before he comes, the inhabitants of Egypt and Sham will kill their rulers and their commanders... (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 49)
In 1981, Egyptian president Anwar al-Sadat (1970-81) was assassinated during a military review.

Eclipse of the moon and sun in/during Ramadan (1981-1982)

There are two signs for the Mahdi... The first one is the lunar eclipse in the first night of Ramadan, and the second is the solar eclipse in the middle of this month. (IbnHajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 47)

... The solar eclipse in the middle of the month and the lunar eclipse at the end... (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-zaman, p. 37)

There will be two solar eclipses in Ramadan before the Mahdi's advent. (Mukhtasar Tazkirah Qurtubi)

The most striking point here is that it is impossible for there to be two solar eclipses as well as two lunar eclipses within one month. Such things cannot occur under ordinary conditions. Most signs of the End Times are incidents that the human mind can grasp and realize, depending on certain reasons. If these incidents are examined carefully, some differences become apparent. The best thing to do in such a situation is to locate the areas of agreement. These are the following:

1. There will be solar and lunar eclipses during Ramadan,
2. These will be spaced about 14-15 days apart,
3. The eclipses will be repeated twice.

In line with these calculations, there was a lunar eclipse in 1981 (Hijri 1401) on the 15th day of Ramadan, and a solar eclipse on the 29th day of the month. There was a second lunar eclipse in 1982 (Hijri 1402) on the 14th day of Ramadan, and a solar eclipse on the 28th day of the month. It is also particularly significant that, in that particular instance, there was a full lunar eclipse in the middle of Ramadan, a most striking prophecy.

The occurrence of these incidents during the same period coinciding with the signs of the Mahdi's emergence, and their miraculous recurrence at the onset of the fourteenth Islamic century for two consecutive years (1401-02) makes it possible for these events to be the signs foretold by the hadiths.

The Killing of the Ruler of Damascus (1982)

Before he comes, the inhabitants of Egypt and Sham will kill their rulers and their commanders... (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 49)
The word Sham is not only used for Damascus, for it also means "left" and has long been used to refer to those countries to the left of the Hijaz (where the cities of Makka and Madina stand). Many leaders have been killed in region.

The Rise of a Comet (1986)

A star with a luminous tail will rise from the East before the Mahdi emerges. (Ka'bal-Ahbar)

A comet will be appearing in the East, giving out illumination before he arrives. (Ibn Hajar al-Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 53)

The rise of that star will occur after the eclipse of the Sun and the Moon. (Al-Muttaqi al-Hindi, Al-Burhan fi Alamat al-Mahdi Akhir al-zaman, p. 32)

As referred to by the hadiths, in 1986 (1406), Haley’s Comet passed by Earth. The comet was a bright, shining star that traveled from East to West. This happened after the lunar and solar eclipses of 1981 and 1982 (1401-1402).

The concurrence of this star's rise with other signs of the Mahdi's emergence indicates that Haley’s Comet was the star pointed to in the hadith.

A Tribulation of Dust and Smoke (2001)

Before the Hour comes, there will be a dusty and smoky tribulation like patches of dark night... (Sunan Abu Dawud)

This hadith foretells a dusty, smoky, and dark wave of tribulation just before the Mahdi's advent. The word tribulation (fitna) implies anything that turns peoples' reason and hearts away from the true path; or, it can also imply war, incitement, chaos, disorder, and conflict. The tribulation mentioned in this hadith will leave behind smoke and dust. Furthermore, as this tribulation is described as resembling patches of dark night, its origins are unclear and it is unexpected. Thus, this hadith could refer to one of the world's worst terrorist attacks: 9/11, when New York City and Washington, D.C., were attacked. As the whole world saw, a big, thick cloud of dust and smoke swallowed up the immediate surroundings. A large cloud of smoke formed after the airplanes exploded, smashing into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The resulting smoke reached so high and spread so far that it could be seen throughout the city and even seen from neighboring cities. The ensuing collapse of the Twin Towers caused yet another huge cloud of smoke and of dust, which completely enveloped people in the area.

This act may well be the tribulation like patches of dark night foretold by the hadith as the sign of the Mahdi's emergence. (Allah knows best.)

Flames Destroy Homes in Baghdad (2003)

Baghdad is destroyed by fire in the End Times ... (Risalat al-Khuruj al-Mahdi, vol. 3, p. 177)

During the Second Gulf War in 2003, from the very first day, Baghdad was the target of a very intensive bombing campaign. Under heavy bombardment, Baghdad burned in flames, just as the hadith said it would. Images of Baghdad, which appeared on TV and in newspapers, conveyed this reality to the world. Thus, this is a clear indication that we are living in the End Times. (Allah knows best.)

The Division of Iraq into Three Parts (2003)

According to our Prophet (saas), the people of Iraq will be divided into three groups. One part will join the looters. One group will flee, leaving their families behind. And one group will fight and kill. Prepare yourselves for Doomsday when you see this. (Fera Idu Fevaidi'l Fiqr Fi'l Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntadhar)

Another sign of the End Times is the division of the Iraqi people into three. As the hadith relates, some Iraqis will join the looters. Indeed, at the end of the war, some Iraqis took advantage of the loss of authority and engaged in looting. In fact, some of these people stole and looted in acts that can be defined as pillaging.

The hadith informs us that some people would try so hard to escape that they would not even think about the families they would leave behind.

The hadith also tells that some people would fight and be killed. During this latest Gulf war, some Iraqis fought and died.

The division of Iraq into three, as is related in the hadith's first part, also came true after the first Gulf War in 1991, when the country was divided into the following regions: between the 32nd and 36th parallels, south of the 32nd parallel, and north of the 36th parallel. (Allah knows best.)

An Embargo against Iraq and Damascus (2003)

“It may happen that the people of Iraq may not send their qafiz and dirhams [their measures of food-stuff and their money]." We said:" Who would be responsible for it?" He (saas) said: "The non-Arabs would prevent them." He (saas) again said: "There is the possibility that the people of Syria may not send their dinar and mudd." We said: "Who would be responsible for it?" He (saas) said: "This prevention would be made by the Romans." (Sahih Muslim)

The embargos imposed upon Iraq and Damascus are signs of the End Times. For more than a decade, Iraq has endured embargos. Meanwhile, there exists the possibility of placing an embargo upon Syria.

Iraqis Flee to Damascus and the North (2003)

The innocent and clean people of Iraq will flee to Sham. (Risalat al-Khuruj al-Mahdi, p. 210)

In 2003, immediately before the outbreak of the latest Gulf war, tens of thousands of Iraqis sought to migrate to other countries, especially to Syria. This bears a great similarity to the event described in the hadith. News and pictures about this attempted migration appeared in the media.

No Money Will Be Left to the Iraqis (2003)

The Iraqis will be left with no weighing equipment, and no money will be left to them with which to buy and sell. (Muntakhab Kanz al-`Ummaal, vol. 5, p. 45)

Another portent of the End Times, and thus of the second coming of Prophet ‘Isa (as), is that the Iraqi currency will have no value.

This hadith may indicate two situations. One of them is Iraq's economic collapse after the Iran-Iraq and the Gulf wars. The Iraqi economy, faced with such crisis, could not recover in the post-war period due to the embargos imposed by America and by the UN. The Iraqi people grew even poorer, and poverty became a major problem.

The Loss of an Army (2003)

There are five portents of the Mahdi: a cry from Sufyani, Yemani, and Sama, the sinking of an army in Bayda, and the killing of the innocent. (Narrated by Nu`aym ibn Hammad)

... An army will be sent to him. This army will be leveled while it is somewhere in the desert. (Sahih Muslim)

An army comes to fight. Once they enter the desert, the one in the front and the back disappear, and the ones in the middle cannot save themselves. (Tirmidhi, Sunan Ibn Majah, Sunan Abu Dawud)

The almost sudden disappearance of a large part of the Iraqi army was one of the most striking features of the 2003 American-led war against Iraq. Many newspapers and television channels reported that a 60,000-man army from the Republican Guard, along with some 15,000 Iraqi militiamen from the Fedayeen, got lost. This account indicates that the loss of an army, a portent of the Mahdi's coming, and hence of Prophet ‘Isa's (as) second coming, may already have taken place. (Allah knows best.) In fact, the discovery of some warplanes buried under the desert sands reinforces the possibility that the leveling of an army refers to the Iraqi army.

The Restructuring of Iraq (2003)

Doomsday will not come until Iraq is attacked. Innocent people in Iraq will seek shelter in Sham. Sham will be rebuilt, and Iraq will be rebuilt. (Muntakhab Kanz al`Ummal, vol. 5, p. 254)
The hadith draws attention to the reconstruction of Iraq. Many Iraqi cities were reduced to rubble during the Iran-Iraq war, and then again during the two Gulf wars of 1991 and 2003. After this latest war, Iraq's rebuilding became compulsory because so much of it had been ruined. Looting also contributed to this situation.

Chaos in Damascus, Iraq, and Arabia (2003)

Our Prophet (saas) said: "There will be such troubles and calamities that nobody will be able to find a place of shelter. These woes will move around Sham, fall upon Iraq, and tie the hands and feet of the Arabian Peninsula. The community of Islam will fight against troubles in the steppes. Nobody will feel any sympathy for them or even say: "Alas!" As they try to remedy their woes on the one hand, they will emerge again on the other." (Muntakhab Kanz al-`Ummal, vol. 5, pp. 38-39)

The Sinking down in the East, Tsunami (2004)

… It [the Last Hour] will not come until you see ten signs… landslides [with a sinking down, caving in, or displacement of the earth] in three places, one in the East, one in the West and one in Arabia… (Sahih Muslim)

One of the signs of the Last Day revealed by our Prophet (saas) is that of the sinking down in the East.

The probable significance of this sign is the disappearance of an area of land or a human community. (Allah knows best.) This portent bears a close similarity to the 2004 tsunami disaster in Asia. Therefore, our Prophet's (saas) portent regarding the sinking down in the East may be indicating this terrible catastrophe. (Allah knows best.)

Throughout history, various disasters, earthquakes, and tornadoes have struck Asia and the Far East. These wrought terrible destruction and large numbers of people lost their lives in them. However, the tsunami that took place on 26 December 2004, in Southern Asia that resulted in the loss of more than 220,000 lives, was the worst of these disasters. During this dreadful catastrophe, the enormous energy released by 1000-kilometer breaks, as a result of the movement of underground plates and shifting land masses, together with the enormous energy produced in the oceans, struck the coasts of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Myanmar, the Maldives, the Seychelles, and even Somalia, 5,000 kilometers away.

This tsunami disaster in the End Times, when the signs of the Last Day are coming true, one by one, affected a very wide area, and led to cities being flooded by sea water and to a new map of the world. Therefore, the expression sinking down in the East may well be referring to this disaster in southern Asia. (Allah knows best.)

The Sinking down in the West, Katrina (2005)

… It [the Last Hour] will not come until you see ten signs… landslides [with a sinking down, caving in, or displacement of the earth] in three places, one in the East, one in the West and one in Arabia…(Sahih Muslim)

The terrible destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico, last month, brings to mind another of the signs of the Last Day mentioned by our Prophet (saas): the sinking down in the West.

This sinking, which our Prophet (saas) declares will take place in the End Times, must necessarily be much greater and have a much greater impact than similar ones in the past. Indeed, the damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina was far worse than that inflicted by similar phenomena in the past.

What becomes of you when death meets people and homes become graves?" (Mukhtasar Tazkirah al-Qurtubi, p. 392, no. 726)

The Sinking of the City of New Orleans

Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc on a number of cities, and New Orleans was made uninhabitable. Eighty percent of the city, regarded as one of the main tourist and cultural centers of the USA, was left under water. The water level exceeded 6 meters (19 feet) in some areas. That means that New Orleans literally disappeared by sinking under the waters. In the same way that the portent of a sinking in the east reported by our Prophet (saas) may refer to the tsunami catastrophe that struck Indonesia, so the hadiths of a sinking in the west may indicate the disappearance of the city of New Orleans. There is no doubt that Allah knows the truth of this.

The Occurrence of Great and Astonishing Events

So many appalling incidents will occur in his time. (Imam Rabbani, Letters of Rabbani, vol. 2, p. 258)

Great phenomena will happen in his time. (Ibn Hajar Haythami, Al-Qawl al-Mukhtasar fi `Alamat al-Mahdi al-Muntazar, p. 27)

The signs of his emergence resemble those preparatory signs that earlier gave an indication of our Rasulullah. (Imam Rabbani, Letters of Rabbani, vol, 2, p. 258)

Great and extraordinary events preceded Prophet Mohammed's (saas) birth. For example, a new star rose on that night, 14 towers of the Iranian Emperor's Palace collapsed, the Magians' (fire worshippers') fire that had burned for 1,000 years in Iran went out, the Semavi Valley was flooded, and the Save Lake dried up.

As indicated in the hadiths above, the Mahdi's emergence will resemble that of our Prophet (saas). Great and miraculous phenomena will also take place when he emerges.

1979
The 2,500-year Iranian monarchy collapsed and Mohammad Reza Pahlavi died.

1980
The AIDS virus, identified in 1980, has so far killed tens of thousands of people and is known as the Plague of the Age.

1985
The Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted, wiping the town of Armero off the map and killing 25,000 people.

1989
The Berlin Wall, which for 28 years had symbolized the cold war, was torn down.

1990
The Soviet Union collapsed, thanks to Gorbachev, and the newly independent states of Central Asia emerged.

1991
The Gulf War broke out; Iraq annexed and then fled Kuwait, and was finally occupied by America and Britain in 2003.

1993
Hundreds of thousands of Muslims were killed in the atrocities in Bosnia and Kosovo, and hundreds of thousands more were exiled.

2003
Mars was closer to Earth in August 2003 than at any other time in the past 60,000 years.
12 people lost their lives in a flood in Makkah, which is one of the driest regions in the world.

Gog & Magog

GOG AND MAGOG: WHEN AND WHERE?
Gog and Magog Will Appear in the End Times
Hundreds of portents revealing when and in what manner the End Times will begin are to be found in the hadiths of our Prophet (saas). The fact that the portents described by our Prophet (saas) 1,400 years ago are now coming to pass, one after the other, reveals that glad tidings awaited by believers for centuries are now finally close at hand.
These glad tidings of the End Times tell of the return to Earth of Prophet ‘Isa (as), the holy emissary of Allah, and the way that he, together with the Mahdi, mujaddid (the great renovator) of the 21st century, will put an end to the strife of the Dajjal and cause Qur’anic moral values to prevail all over the world.
In this article we shall be concentrating on Gog and Magog, which our Prophet (saas) has revealed as another portent of the End Times. Who Gog and Magog may be, when they will appear and how they will be eliminated have been subjects of concern for hundreds of years, and a great many books and articles have been written about them. However, we can obtain the most accurate information about Gog and Magog, who also appear in the Bible, the Christians’ holy scripture, and in the Torah of the Jews, from the verses of the Qur’an, the hadiths of our Prophet (saas) as well as the works of eminent Islamic scholars.
The Barrier Built by the Prophet Dhu’l-Qarnayn (as) Prevented the Corruption of Gog and Magog in the Past
In Surat al-Kahf, Allah refers to Gog and Magog as follows:
They said, “Dhu’l-Qarnayn! Gog and Magog are causing corruption in the land. Can we, therefore, pay tribute to you in return for your constructing a barrier between us and them?’ (Surat al-Kahf: 94)
In these verses, Gog and Magog are described as a people who will cause corruption on Earth. Indeed, Bediuzzaman Said Nursi said of them that: “Gog and Magog are two communities created by Allah that plunder and sow disharmony, and whom it is impossible for the civilised and civilisation to escape.”
He said, “The power my Lord has granted me is better than that. Just give me a strong helping hand and I will build a solid barrier between you and them. Bring me ingots of iron!” Then, when he had made it level between the two high mountainsides, he said, “Blow!” and when he had made it a red-hot fire, he said, “Bring me molten brass to pour over it.” They were, therefore, unable to climb over it nor were they able to make a breach in it. (Surat al-Kahf: 95-97)
As we are told in these verses, Dhu’l-Qarnayn (as) assisted those who asked for his help by building a strong barrier between two mountains. Bediuzzaman describes this barrier in these words: “It was a large wall, enclosed on all sides, to keep out the evil of those who bring forth wickedness.”
The great wall built by Dhu’l-Qarnayn (as) to keep out the peoples of Gog and Magog, halted the oppression of these wicked wreakers of evil.
The collapse of the Prophet Dhu’l-Qarnayn’s wall is a portent of Doomsday
Gog and Magog are also referred to in Surat al-Anbiya’. The verse in question refers to the period after that in Surat al-Kahf, and describes Gog and Magog as “a sign of Doomsday.” In the period before Doomsday, the barrier reported in Surat al-Kahf will be demolished, as is revealed as follows:
He said, “This is a mercy from my Lord. But when my Lord’s promise comes about, He will crush it flat. The promise of my Lord is surely true.” (Surat al-Kahf: 98)
There are several accounts concerning the demolition of the wall of Dhu’l-Qarnayn (as). According to Bediuzzaman, the common feature of all these accounts is that the demolition of the wall is regarded as a portent of Doomsday.
In his work Muhakamat, Bediuzzaman states that “The wall will be demolished when the time appointed by Allah comes…” and “the destruction of the wall will be a portent of Doomsday.”
The Qur’an tells us that when the wall is torn down, Gog and Magog will pour down from every peak:
When Gog and Magog are let loose and rush down from every slope, and the True Promise is very close, the eyes of those who disbelieved will be transfixed: “Alas for us! We were unmindful of this! No, rather we were definitely wrongdoers.” (Surat al-Anbiya’: 96-97)
The reference in the verses to “the True Promise is very close” means that the hour of Doomsday is approaching. In one of the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (saas), we are told that: “Doomsday will not take place until ten signs appear: the Sun rising in the west, Smoke, the Beast (Dabba), Gog and Magog, the descent of ‘Isa (as) son of Maryam, three (great) earthquakes. . . .”
Gog and Magog Consist of Such Peoples as the Mongols, Tatars and Manchus
Bediuzzaman has provided clear information as to the identities of Gog and Magog. He interprets the region where Dhu’l-Qarnayn (as) built his wall as an area in the Himalayas: “A long wall was built between two mountains close to the Himalayan mountains, which for a long time prevented the frequent assaults of those savage peoples; and barriers were also built through the efforts of the kings of ancient Persia, who resembled Dhu’l-Qarnayn, in the mountains of Caucasia, in the region of Darband, to halt the inroads of the plundering and pillaging Tatar peoples.”
Elsewhere, he states that Gog and Magog are Mongol and Manchu in origin, both Asiatic peoples:
It is an allusion and indication that just as the Manchurian and Mongol tribes, which in the heavenly tongue of the Qur’an are called “Gog and Magog,” together with some other tribes, several times overturned Asia and Europe; so will they again cause chaos in the world in the future.”
The Mongols, who founded a great empire in the 13th century, wielded one of the most savage and barbaric armies in history.
Led first by Genghis Khan and later by his grandson Hulagu, this plundering horde of Mongols and Tatars perpetrated terrible slaughter. According to historical sources, they plundered everything in sight, destroyed, and murdered everyone, including women and children. When they reached Anatolia, they killed hundreds of thousands of people in Sivas, Kayseri and Tokat. They destroyed all mosques, libraries and madrassas in the regions they conquered. According to historical sources, they killed millions in some cities, right down even to dogs and cats.
Like the Mongols, the Manchus were a barbaric, warlike and nomadic race that conquered many countries and perpetrated terrible massacres. In his works, Bediuzzaman reports that the Mongols and the Manchus are also the ancestors of Gog and Magog, who will appear in the End Times. One quotation from Bediuzzaman on this subject reads:
The most famous barrier on Earth, the Great Wall of China, covers a distance of several days’ journeying and was built to halt the incursions against the oppressed peoples of India and China of the savage tribes known in the Qur’an as Gog and Magog, and otherwise known as the Mongols and Manchurians. These tribes several times threw the world of humanity into chaos, and pouring out from behind the Himalayas wrought destruction from East to West.
According to this statement by Bediuzzaman, Gog and Magog:
* Are from the Manchu and Mongol races.
* First conquered Europe and Asia and devastated everywhere from East to West, and will again devastate the world in the End Times.
* Will emerge from behind the Himalayas.
* Are an aggressive and plundering society.
* Had their attacks halted by the barrier Dhu’l-Qarnayn (as) erected to protect innocent peoples.
The Dajjal will Prepare the Way for Gog and Magog
In those hadiths regarding the End Times, it is related that the appearance of the Dajjal, who will orchestrate evil on Earth, turn people away from religious moral values and cause chaos and corruption, is one of the portents of Doomsday. The chaos, conflict and anarchy now being experienced in many parts of the globe, especially in the Islamic world, are one of the signs that the appearance of the Dajjal is approaching. In one hadith, this period is described as one in which “there will be great strife, chaos and rebellions and people will kill one another. People will take their own lives and disasters will enfold the world.”
The information provided in the hadiths shows that the Dajjal will encourage, and even orchestrate, chaos and oppression on Earth. Constant bloodshed, killing, the slaughter of the innocent in wars, the destruction of order and the fear and restlessness that give rise to terror are spread with the Dajjal’s encouragement.
Hadiths report that the severity of these phenomena will increase when the Dajjal appears. Bediuzzaman has stated that by spreading corruption on Earth, the Dajjal will prepare the way for Gog and Magog:
“The Dajjal will prepare the way for anarchy and Gog and Magog by damaging the unifying elements that manage the social lives of Christians through the indoctrination of Satan and eliminating the stipulations of Christianity ”
According to this quotation from Bediuzzaman,
- The Dajjal will act in the light of Satan’s suggestions and rules.
- He will do away with the provisions of Christianity.
- He will impair those elements that bind Christians together.
- These actions will lead to anarchy, chaos and corruption in Christian societies.
- In the light of all this, he will establish a highly suitable environment for Gog and Magog, and these, anarchical and wicked, will benefit from this atmosphere of chaos.
Gog and Magog are a Society of Humans
From the verses of the Qur’an and the hadiths, it is clear that Gog and Magog are human. Some of the evidence on this subject is included in the hadiths of our Prophet (saas):
- According to the hadiths, “They will be descended from the line of Adam (as).”
- Our Prophet (saas) has indicated, “They are one or two spans in size, the largest is three spans. . . .” The term “one or two spans in size” is a generalization implying shortness of stature.
- They are a people with distinctive features: “You will constantly wage war against the foe; you will even wage war against Gog and Magog, who have wide faces, small eyes and chestnut hair . . . .. ”
- As revealed in hadiths, “They are a community who spread wickedness."
- “Gog and Magog consist of 22 tribes.”
Gog and Magog will be an Anarchical, Aggressive and Oppressive Society
In his works, Bediuzzaman offers a very wise account of the ideology of Gog and Magog, saying that anarchism makes people “savage and cruel beings,” and goes on to describe the anarchic character of Gog and Magog:
Just the place for the idea of anarchy will be those oppressed, numerous raiding tribes, which are backward in respect of both civilization and government. The people who fit those conditions are the Manchurian, Mongol, and some of the Kirghiz tribes, who caused the building of the Great Wall of China, which is forty days’ distance in length and is one of the seven wonders of the world.
And Gog and Magog are Manchus, Kirghiz and Manchus and Mongols present in China; and the anarchists who are found everywhere; and communists, who take socialism to excess.”
Anarchy recognizes no rights, but views the human character as that of wild animals. The Qur’an indicates that the organization of Gog and Magog that will come in the End Times consists of anarchists.
The following conclusions can be drawn from Bediuzzaman’s accounts:
- Gog and Magog will adopt an anarchistic mindset. As Bediuzzaman has emphasised "Even now, the important anarchic individuals within communism come from there” Gog and Magog who impose communist thinking on Asian racism, will adopt a policy of savagery and hared towards other races.
- In addition to the Mongols and Manchus, it’s also likely that certain ignorant Asian communities will join Gog and Magog and act alongside them within a racist mentality.
- Bediuzzaman’s statement that "as Doomsday approaches, they will again devastate civilization with such ideas as anarchism” also shows that this society will be delighting in mass killings and shows of strength.
Gog and Magog are Disbelievers
From the hadiths, it can be seen that Gog and Magog are societies that do not believe in God. In one hadith our Prophet (saas) has stated,
“On the night of the Ascension [the Miraj], Allah sent me to Gog and Magog; I called them to the religion, but they refused . . . For that reason, they will go to Hell together with those of the line of Adam and Satan who rebelled against Allah.”
- As reported in the hadith, Gog and Magog will be disbelievers.
- It can also be seen from the hadiths and the information provided by Bediuzzaman that they will engage in savagery, plundering, and other barbaric practices and have no conception of the lawful versus the unlawful.
The Dajjal (AntiChrist) and Gog and Magog will be Eliminated in the Time of Prophet ‘Isa
In the hadiths, there are several statements to the effect that Prophet ‘Isa (as) will defeat the Dajjal intellectually. Some of the hadiths on this subject read:
At that point, the Dajjal, the enemy of Allah, will dissolve like salt in water when he sees Prophet Isa.
As the Dajjal spreads corruption, God will send the Messiah, ‘Isa son of Maryam ... every believer who feels his healing breath will disappear. ‘Isa will meet the Dajjal at the gate of Ludd [near Jerusalem] and will destroy him. . . .
From Bediuzzaman’s accounts, it also appears that the deceptive influence of the Dajjal will be lifted by means of Prophet ‘Isa (as):
It could only be a wondrous person with the power of miracles who could kill and change the way of the awesome Dajjal, who will preserve himself through wonders, bestowed on him by God in order to lead him astray, such as magic, hypnotic powers, and spiritualism, and will spellbind everyone. And that person will be Jesus (Peace be upon him), who is the prophet of the majority of humanity, and whom most people follow.
As stated by Bediuzzaman, the Dajjal will deceive people through various false miracles, act with the support of Satan and perform various extraordinary actions. His destruction will be possible only by means of holy Prophet ‘Isa (as), several of whose miracles have been mentioned by our Lord. By the will of Allah, Prophet ‘Isa (as) will eradicate the strife of the Dajjal both easily and quickly.
The hadiths also describe how Prophet ‘Isa (as) will eradicate all the foundations of the ideology of the Dajjal. In the environment established by the Dajjal at that time, Gog and Magog will work evil and oppress various societies.
Prophet Muhammad (saas) states in the hadiths that the prayers of Prophet ‘Isa (as) will be a means whereby Gog and Magog are destroyed. In one hadith, it is reported that Prophet ‘Isa (as) said this to our Prophet (saas) during his Ascension:
Gog and Magog will begin to attack from every peak. And they will drink and consume all water they come across, and destroy everything they encounter, at which the people will rebel and seek help from Allah. And I ?Prophet ‘Isa] will pray to Allah that He kill Gog and Magog. My prayer will be heeded, and the earth will stink of their corpses. I shall pray to Allah again. Allah will send water, and the water will bear them away to the sea.
As the hadith informs us, our infinitely merciful Lord will heed the prayer of Prophet ‘Isa (as) and eliminate the line of Gog and Magog.
This eradication is described in these terms in hadiths:
Then Allah will send Gog and Magog . . . Then Prophet ‘ISA (as), the prophet of Allah, and his companions will pray to Allah, and
Allah will send a worm in the necks of the camels and goats in the enemy army and will destroy them all, as if it were the death of a single person . . .
Prophet ‘Isa (as) and his companions will pray for them to be freed from their evil. Allah will send worms from the sky to drink the blood from their necks, and they will all die . . . there will be no noise or sound at all.
Several hadiths contain reports about the sickness to be inflicted on Gog and Magog as retribution:
Allah will send worms from the sky to drink the blood from their necks, and they will all die . . . .”
Then, Allah will afflict them with worms in the nose parts of camels and sheep on their necks and heads, and these worms will kill them all [at once].
Then, Allah will rain down on them microbes and animals known as nasal worms belonging to camels and sheep, and these microbes will cling to their necks and kill them all. . . .
It can be seen from these hadiths that the people of Gog and Magog will be punished with a sickness and that in this way, their strife will be brought to an end.
In one hadith, our Prophet (saas) says, “The armies of Gog and Magog will die like locusts, one on top of the other.” The deaths of Gog and Magog are likened to those of locusts. In normal times, locusts are generally few in numbers but suddenly multiply and ravage crops. Their deaths are also sudden and en masse. It is very likely that the deaths of Gog and Magog will be like this.

Allah may Inflict the “Dabbat Al-Ard [Beast of the Earth]” on Gog and Magog as a Punishment
Dabba is an Arabic word meaning “animal” or “beast,” which derives from debbe, which means a light walking or to struggle, it is used for animals and insects. In Risale-i Nur Collection, Bediuzzaman interprets the sickness that will be inflicted on Gog and Magog as the Dabbat al-Ard. In one extract, the Master describes the Dabbat al-Ard in these terms:
God knows best, that beast is a species. For even if huge, a single creature could not be everywhere. That means there will be a truly terrible species of animal. Perhaps, as indicated by the verse, “Except a little worm of the earth, which kept [slowly] gnawing away at his staff,” (Qur’an, 34:14) that creature will be a sort of termite, called “Dabbat al-Ard,” which will gnaw away at the bones of men as though they were wooden, establishing themselves in every part of their bodies, from their teeth to their finger-nails.
In this extract, Bediuzzaman notes that if the Dabba were a single creature, it could not reach everywhere, for which reason it must be a group of animals, not a single one.
. . . .“Except a little worm of the earth, which kept [slowly] gnawing away at his staff,” (Qur’an, 34:14) that creature will be a sort of termite, called “Dabbat al-Ard,” which will gnaw away at the bones of men as though they were wooden, establishing themselves in every part of their bodies, from their teeth to their finger-nails.
By referring to the “worm of earth” that appears in the Surah Saba’ and that gnawed the sceptre of Prophet Sulayman (as),
Bediuzzaman is stating that the Dabbat al-Ard to be inflicted on Gog and Magog as a punishment is a communal animal similar to the termite. According to Bediuzzaman, this Dabba will settle in people’s bodies and spread to every part of them, from their teeth to their finger-nails. According to this interpretation, it is possible that Bediuzzaman is referring to the Dabbat al-Ard as a kind of virus or microbe.
Bediuzzaman also makes a significant evaluation of the worm that will be a means whereby the strife of Gog and Magog comes to an end. The Master evaluates a worm in their heads, necks and the backs of their necks as a retribution:
. . . for the purpose of bringing to their senses those people who knowingly and willingly rebel due to the dissension of the Sufyan and
Dajjals, and through the anarchy of Gog and Magog embark on corruption and savagery, and fall into irreligion, disbelief, and denial, a beast will emerge from the earth and beset and rout them.
In this quotation Bediuzzaman is referring to a human society that needs to be brought to reason. This is a society that :
1. Knowingly and willingly rebels, due to the dissension of the Sufyan and Dajjals,
2. Through the anarchy of Gog and Magog, embarks on corruption and savagery
3. Falls into irreligion, disbelief, and denial.
“ . . . for the purpose of bringing to their senses those people who knowingly and willingly rebel due to the dissension of the Sufyan and Dajjals, and through the anarchy of Gog and Magog embark on corruption and savagery, and fall into irreligion, disbelief, and denial . . . . .”
The Dajjal and Gog and Magog are hostile to all sacred values, and are aggressive deniers. They will seek to lead people into strife.
They will rebel against Allah and encourage all forms of excess. Through their anarchistic methods, Gog and Magog will lead people into evil and corruption and towards atheism and denial. To summarize, under the effect of the strife of the End Times, people will knowingly and willingly turn to denial and rebellion.
“ . . . . a beast will emerge from the earth and beset and rout them.”
Our Lord will punish these individuals of the End Times with a Dabba. It can be seen from this quotation that the Dabbat al-Ard will appear in a period when the strife of the Dajjal has not been completely eliminated, when the corruption of Gog and Magog persists, and when people fall into denial and perversion. In all probability, it will be the Dabbat al-Ard or some similar animal that will be the vehicles whereby Gog and Magog die en masse.
CONCLUSION
The fact that the strife of the Dajjal and that of Gog and Magog will be eliminated by Prophet ‘Isa (as) is splendid news for all believers.
As our Prophet (saas) has stated in one hadith, “Prophet ‘Isa (as) and the believers will live many years after Gog and Magog.” This will be an age ruled by peace, proper moral values and security.
Today, the strife of the Dajjal is everywhere. Atheist ideologies, materialism, Darwinism, moral degeneration and wars threaten all humanity. Widespread propaganda is being disseminated to turn people away from religious moral values, and corruption is increasing every day. Some people are knowingly and willingly taken in by the strife of the Dajjal, and others unknowingly.
The only way people can protect themselves against these disasters is by clinging tightly to religious moral values and engaging in an intellectual struggle against atheist ideologies. At this period in the End Times, no believer will want to be insensitive to the question of living by religion--because being so could well mean knowingly and willingly, as Bediuzzaman puts it, supporting the strife of Gog and Magog.
Therefore, Muslims need to cling joyously and excitedly to religious moral values in order not to fall prey to the Dajjal. It will be possible to establish the finest support for Prophet ‘Isa (as) and the Mahdi--who will fight against the Messiah Dajjal in the End Times, defeat him in the intellectual arena, and eliminate the strife of Gog and Magog--only by making the necessary preparations beforehand. For that reason, we are living in the time when all true believers, who for centuries have been awaiting the coming of these two holy individuals, must do all in their power to live by religious moral values--and to have others do the same.

And Sufyan made a sign of ten with the help of his hand (in order to indicate the width of the gap) and I said: Allah's Messenger, would we be perished in spite of the fact that there would be good people amongst us? Thereupon he said: Of course, but only when the evil predominates.

I said: Allah's Messenger, would we be destroyed despite the fact that there would be pious people amongst us? He said: Yes, when the evil would predominate.

Chapter 2: THE SINKING OF AN ARMY IN THE EARTH WHICH WOULD ATTACK THE HOUSE
Book 041, Number 6886:

Harith b Abi Rabi'a and 'Abdullah b. Safwan both went to Umm Salama, the Mother of the Faithful, and they asked her about the army which would be sunk in the earth, and this relates to the time when Ibn Zubair (was the governor of Mecca). She reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) had said that a seeker of refuge would seek refuge in the Sacred House and an army would be sent to him (in order to kill him) and when it would enter a plain ground, it would be made to sink. I said: Allah's Messenger, what about him who would be made to accompany this army willy nilly? Thereupon he said: He would be made to sink along with them buf he would be raised on the Day of Resurrection on the basis of his intention. Abu Ja'far said. ' This plain, ground means the plain ground of Medina.
Book 041, Number 6887:

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah b. Rufai, with the same chain of transmitters (but with the addition of these words):" When I met Abu Ja'far I told him that she (simply) meant the plain ground. Thereupon Abu Ja'far said: No, by God, she meant the plain ground of Medina.

Safwan reported that Hafsa told him that she had heard Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) as saying: An army would attack this House in order to fight against the inhabitants of this House and when it would be at the plain ground the ranks in the centre of the army would be sunk and the vanguard would call the rear flanks of the army and they would also be sunk and no flank would be left except some people who would go to inform them (their kith and kin). A person (who had been listening to this badith from Abdullah b. Safwan) said: I bear testimony in regard to you that you are not imputing a lie to Hafsa. And I bear testimony to the fact that Hafsa is not telling a lie about Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him).
Book 041, Number 6889:

Abdullah b. Safwan reported the Mother of the Faithful as saying that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: They would soon seek protection in this House, viz. Ka'ba (the defenceless), people who would have nothing to protect themselves in the shape of weapons or the strength of the people. An army would be sent to fight (and kill) them and when they would enter a plain ground the army would be sunk in it. Yiisuf (one of the narrators) said: It was a people of Syria (hordes of Hajjaj) who had been on that day comin. towards Mecca for an attack (on 'Abdulllah b. Zubair) and Abdullah b. Safwan said: By God, it does not imply this army.
Book 041, Number 6890:

'A'isha reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was startled in the state of sleep. We said: Allah's Messenger, you have done something in the state of your sleep which you never did before, Thereupon he said: Strange it is that some, people of my Ummah would attack the House (Ka'ba) (for killing) a person who would belong to the tribe of the Quraish and he would try to seek protection in the House. And when they would reach the plain ground they would be sunk. We said: Allah's Messenger, all sorts of people throng the path. Thereupon he said: Yes, there would be amongst them people who would come with definite designs and those who would come under duress and there would be travellers also, but they would all be destroyed through one (stroke) of destruction. though they would be raised in different states (on the Day of Resurrection). Allah would, however, raise them according to their intention.

Chapter 3: THE TURMOIL WOULD COME LIKE RAINFALL
Book 041, Number 6891:

He who would watch them will be drawn by them. So he who finds a refuge or shelter against it should make it as his resort.
Book 041, Number 6894:

This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Abu Huraira but with this variation of wording that in the hadith transmitted on the authority of Abu Bakr, there is an addition of these words:" There is a prayer among prayers ('Asr) and one who misses it is as if his family and property have been ruined."

Behold! when the turmoil comes or it appears, the one who has camel should stick to his camel and he who has sheep or goat should stick to his sheep and goat and he who has land should stick to the land. A person said: 'Allah's Messenger, what is your opinion about one who has neither camel nor sheep nor land? Thereupon, he said: He should take hold of his sword and beat its edge with the help of stone and then try to find a way of escape. O Allah, I have conveyed (Thy Message) ; O Allah, I have conveyed (Thy Message) ; O Allah, I have conveyed (Thy Message). A person said: Allah's Messenger, what is your opinion it I am drawn to a rank in spite of myself, or in one of the groups and made to march and a man strikes with his sword or there comes an arrow and kills me? Thereupon he said: He will bear the punishment of his sin and that of yours and he would be one amongst the denizens of Hell.

Book 041, Number 6898:

Ahnaf b. Qais reported: I set out with the intention of helping this person (Hadrat 'Ali) that Abu Bakra met me. He said: Ahnaf, where do you intend to go? I said: I intend to help the cousin of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him), viz. 'Ali. Thereupon he said to me: Ahnaf, go back, for I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: When two Muslims confront one another with swords (in hands) both the slayer and the slain would be in Fire. He (Ahnaf) said: I said, or it was said: Allah's Messenger, it may be the case of one who kills. but what about the slain (why he would be put in Hell-Fire)? Thereupon he said: He also intended to kill his companion.

Book 041, Number 6902:

Book 041, Number 6904:

Thauban reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Allah drew the ends of the world near one another for my sake. And I have seen its eastern and western ends. And the dominion of my Unimah would reach those ends which have been drawn near me and I have been granted the red and the white trea- sure and I begged my Lord for my Ummah that it should not be destroyed because of famine, nor be dominated by an enemy who is not amongst them to take their lives and destroy them root and branch, and my Lord said: Muhammad, whenever I make a decision, there is none to change it. Well, I grant you for your Ummah that it would not be destroyed by famine and it would not be dominated by an enemy who would not be amongst it and would take their lives and destroy them root and branch even if all the people from the different parts of the world join hands together (for this purpose), but it would be from amongst them, viz. your Ummah, that some people would kill the others or imprison the others.

He then came to us and said: I asked my Lord three things and He has granted me two but has withheld one. I begged my Lord that my Ummah should not be destroyed because of famine and He granted me this. And I begged my Lord that my Ummah should not be destroyed by drowning (by deluge) and He granted me this. Chapter 6: THE EVENTS FORETOLD BY THE HOLY PROPHET (MAY PEACE BE UPON HIM) ABOUT THE LAST HOUR
Book 041, Number 6908:

Hudhaifa b. al-Yaman reported: By Allah, I have the best knowledge amongst people about every turmoil which is going to appear in the period intervening me and the Last Hour; and it is not for the fact that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) told me something confidentially pertaining to it and he did not tell anybody else about it, but it is because of the fact that I was present in the assembly in which he had been describing the turmoil. and he especially made a mention of three turmoils which would not spare anything and amongst these there would be turmoils like storms in the hot season. Some of them would be violent and some of them would be comparatively mild. Hudhaifa said: All (who were present) except I have gone (to the next world).
Book 041, Number 6909:

Hudhaifa reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) stood before us one day and he did not leave anything unsaid (that he had to say) at that very spot which would happen (in the shape of turmoil) up to the Last Hour. Those who had to remember them preserved them in their minds and those who could not remember them forgot them. My friends knew them and there are certain things which slip out of my mind, but I recapitulate them when anyone makes a mention of them just as a person is lost from one's mind but is recalled to him on seeing his face.
Book 041, Number 6910:

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of A'mash with the same chain of transmitters up to the words: And he forgot who had to forget that and. he did not make a mention of what follows after this.
Book 041, Number 6911:

Hudhaifa reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) informed me of what is going to happen before the approach of the Last Hour. And there is nothing that I did not ask him in this connection except this that I did not ask him as to what would turn the people of Medina out from Medina.

Abu Zaid (viz. Amr b. Akhtab) reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) led us in the dawn prayer and then mounted the pulpit and addressed us until it was (time for the) noon prayer. He then came down the pulpit and observed prayer and then again mounted the pulpit and again addressed us until it was time for the 'Asr prayer. He then again came down and observed the prayer and again mointed the pulpit and addressed us until the sun was set and he informed (about) everything (pertaining to turmoil) that lay hidden in the past and what lies in (the womb) of) the future and the most learned amongst us is one who remembers them well

Chapter 7: THE TURMOIL WOULD GO LIKE THE MOUNTING WAVES OF THE OCEAN
Book 041, Number 6914:

Hudhaifa repotted: We were one day in the company of 'Umar that he said: Who amongst you has preserved in his mind most perfectly the hadith of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) in regard to the turmoil as he told about it? I said: It is I. Thereupon he said: You are bold (enough to make this claim). And he further said: How? I said: I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There would (first) be turmoil for a person in regard to his family, his property, his own self, his children, his neighbours (and the sins comnaitted in their connection) would be expiated by fasting, prayer, charity, enjoining good and prohibiting evil. Thereupon 'Umar said: I do not mean (that turmoil on a small scale) but that one which would eme-ge like the mounting waves of the ocean. I said: Commander of the Faithful, you have nothing to do with it, for the door is closed between you and that. He said: Would that door be broken or opened? I said: No, it would be broken. Thereupon he said: Then it would not be closed despite best efforts. We said to Hudhaifa: Did Umar know the door? Thereupon he said: Yes, he knew it (for certain) just as one knows that night precede the next day. And I narrated to him something in which there was nothing fabricated. Shaqiq (one of the narrators) said: We dared not ask Hudhaifa about that door. So we requested Masrdq to ask him. So he asked him and he said: (By that door, he meant) 'Umar.
Book 041, Number 6915:

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Hudhaifa through other chains of transmitters also.
Book 041, Number 6916:

Hudhaifa reported that Umar said: Who would narrate to us (the ahadith pertaining to turmoil) and he reported a badith similar to these ahadith.
Book 041, Number 6917:

Jundub reported: I came on the day of Jara'a that a person was (found) sitting. I said: They would shed their blood today. That person said: By Allah. not at all. I said: By Allah, of course, they would do it. He said: By Allah, they would not do it. I said: By Allah, of course, they would do it. He said: By Allah, they would not do it, and I have heard a hadith of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) which I am narrating to you in this connection. I said: You are a bad seat fellow. I have been opposing you since morning and you are listening to me in spite of the fact that you have heard a hadith from Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) (contrary to ray statement). I myself felt that there was no use of this annoyance. (He could tell me earlier that it was a hadith of the Holy Prophet (may peace be upon him], and I would not have opposed him at all.) I turned my face toward him and asked him and he was Hadrat Hudhaifa.

Chapter 8: THE LAST HOUR WOULD NOT COME UNTIL THE EUPIIRATES UNCOVERS A TREASURE OF GOLD
Book 041, Number 6918:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Last Hour would not come before the Euphrates uncovers a mountain of gold, for which people would fight. Ninety-nine out of each one hundred would die but every man amongst them would say that perhaps he would be the one who would be saved (and thus possess this gold).
Book 041, Number 6919:

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Suhail with the same chain of transmitters but with this addition:" My father said: If you see that, do not even go near it."
Book 041, Number 6920:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Last Hour would not come unless the Euphrates would uncover a treasure of gold, so he who finds it should not take anything out of that.
Book 041, Number 6921:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Euphrates would soon uncover a mountain of gold but he who is present there should not take anything from that.
Book 041, Number 6922:

'Abdullah b. Harith b. Naufal reported: I was standing along with Ubayy b. Ka, b and he said: The opinions of the people differ in regard to the achievement of worldly ends. I said: Yes, of course. Thereupon he said: I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Euphrates would soon uncover a mountain of gold and when the people would bear of it they would flock towards it but the people who would possess that (treasure) (would say): If we allow these persons to take out of it they would take away the whole of it. So they would fight and ninety-nine out of one hundred would be killed. Abu Kamil in his narration said: I and Abu Ka'b stood under the shade of the battlement of Hassan.
Book 041, Number 6923:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Iraq would withhold its dirhams and qafiz; Syria would withhold its mudd and dinar and Egypt would withhold its irdab and dinar and you would recoil to that position from where you started and you would recoil to that position from where you started and you would recoil to that position from where you started, the bones and the flesh of Abu Huraira would bear testimony to it.

Chapter 9: PERTAINING TO THE CONQUEST OF CONSTANTINOPLE AND THE APPEARANCE OF THE DAJJAL AND DESCENT OF JESUS SON OF MARY (JESUS CHRIST)
Book 041, Number 6924:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Last Hour would not come until the Romans would land at al-A'maq or in Dabiq. An army consisting of the best (soldiers) of the people of the earth at that time will come from Medina (to counteract them). When they will arrange themselves in ranks, the Romans would say: Do not stand between us and those (Muslims) who took prisoners from amongst us. Let us fight with them; and the Muslims would say: Nay, by Allah, we would never get aside from you and from our brethren that you may fight them. They will then fight and a third (part) of the army would run away, whom Allah will never forgive. A third (part of the army). which would be constituted of excellent martyrs in Allah's eye, would be killed ani the third who would never be put to trial would win and they would be conquerors of Constantinople. And as they would be busy in distributing the spoils of war (amongst themselves) after hanging their swords by the olive trees, the Satan would cry: The Dajjal has taken your place among your family. They would then come out, but it would be of no avail. And when they would come to Syria, he would come out while they would be still preparing themselves for battle drawing up the ranks. Certainly, the time of prayer shall come and then Jesus (peace be upon him) son of Mary would descend and would lead them in prayer. When the enemy of Allah would see him, it would (disappear) just as the salt dissolves itself in water and if he (Jesus) were not to confront them at all, even then it would dissolve completely, but Allah would kill them by his hand and he would show them their blood on his lance (the lance of Jesus Christ).

Chapter 10: THE LAST HOUR WOULD COME WHEN THE ROMANS WOULD HAVE THE MAXIMUM POPULATION
Book 041, Number 6925:

Mustaurid al-Qurashi reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Last Hour would come (when) the Romans would form a majority amongst people. 'Amr said to him (Mustaurid Qurashi): See what you are saying? He said: I say what I heard from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). Thereupon he said: If you say that, it is a fact for they have four qualities. They have the patience to undergo a trial and immediately restore themselves to sanity after trouble and attack again after flight. They (have the quality) of being good to the destitute and the orphans, to the weak and, fifthly, the good quality in them is that they put resistance against the oppression of kings.
Book 041, Number 6926:

Mustaurid Qurashi reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Last Hour would come when the Romans would form a majority amongst people. This reached 'Amr b. al-'As and he said: What are these ahadith which are being transmitted from you and which you claim to have heard from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him)? Mustaurid said to him: I stated only that which I heard from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). Thereupon 'Amr said: If you state this (it is true), for they have the power of tolerance amongst people at the time of turmoil and restore themselves to sanity after trouble, and are good amongst people so far as the destitute and the weak are concerned.

Chapter 11: THERE WOULD BE MUCH BLOODSHED AMONG ROMANS AT THE TIME OF THE APPEARANCE OF THE DAJJAL
Book 041, Number 6927:

Yusair b. Jabir reported: Once there blew a red storm in Kufah that there came a person who had nothing to say but (these words): Abdullah b. Mas'ud, the Last Hour has come. He ('Abdullah b. Mas'ud) was sitting reclining against something, and he said: The Last Hour would not come until the people divide in- heritance and rejoice over booty, and then said pointing towards Syria, with the gesture of his hand like this: The enemy shall muster strength against Muslims and the Muslims will muster strength against them (Syrians). I said: You mean Rome? And he said: Yes, and there would be a terrible fight and the Muslims would prepare a detachment (for fighting unto death) which would not return but victorious. They will fight until night will intervene them; both the sides will return without being victorious and both will be wiped out. The Muslims will again prepare a detachment for fighting unto death so that they may not return but victorious. When it would be the fourth day, a new detachment out of the remnant of the Muslims would be prepared and Allah will decree that the enemy should be routed. And they would fight such a fight the like of which would not be seen, so much so that even if a bird were to pass their flanks, it would fall down dead before reaching the end of them. (There would be such a largescale massacre) that when counting would be done, (only) one out of a hundred men related to one another would be found alive. So what can be the joy at the spoils of such war and what inheritance would be divided! They would be in this very state that they would hear of a calamity more horrible than this. And a cry would reach them: The Dajjil has taken your place among your off- spring. They will, therefore, throw away what would be in their hands and go forward sending ten horsemen, as a scouting party. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: I know their names and the names of their forefathers and the colour of their horses. They will be best horsemen on the surface of the earth on that day or amongst the best horsemen on the surface of the earth on that day.
Book 041, Number 6928:

Jabir reported: I was in the company of Ibn Mas'ud that there blew a red storm. The rest of the hadith is the same.
Book 041, Number 6929:

Jabir reported: I was in the house of 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud and the house was fully packed that a red storm blew in Kufah.

Chapter 12: THE CONQUESTS OF THE MUSLIMS BEFORE THE APPEARANCE OF THE DAJJAL
Book 041, Number 6930:

Nafi' b. Utba reported: We were with Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) in an expedition that there came a people to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) from the direction of the west. They were dressed in woollen clothes and they stood near a hillock and they met him as Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was sitting. I said to myself: Better go to them and stand between him and them that they may not attack him. Then I thought that perhaps there had been going on secret negotiation amongst them. I however, went to them and btood between them and him and I remember four of the words (on that occasion) which I repeat (on the fingers of my hand) that he (Allah's Messenger) said: You will attack Arabia and Allah will enable you to conquer it, then you would attack Persia and He would make you to Conquer it. Then you would attack Rome and AllgLh will enable you to conquer it, then you would attack the Dajjal and Allah will enable you to conquer him. Nafi' said: Jabir, we thought that the Dajjal would appear after Rome (Syrian territory) would be conquered.

Chapter 13: THE SIGNS BEFORE THE APPROACH OF THE LAST HOUR
Book 041, Number 6931:

Hudhaifa b. Usaid Ghifari reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) came to us all of a sudden as we were (busy in a discussion). He said: What do you discuss about? They (the Companions) said. We are discussing about the Last Hour. Thereupon he said: It will not cone until you see ten signs before and (in this connection) he made a mention of the smoke, Dajjal, the beast, the rising of the sun from the west, the descent of Jesus son of Mary (Allah be pleased with him), the Gog and Magog, and land-slidings in three places, one in the east, one in the west and one in Arabia at the end of which fire would burn forth from the Yemen, and would drive people to the place of their assembly.
Book 041, Number 6932:

Hudhaifa b. Usaid reported: Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) was in an apartment and we were beneath that that he peeped in and said to us: What are you discussing about? We said: (We are discussing about the Last) Hour. Thereupon he said: The Last Hour would not come until the ten signs dppear: land-sliding in the east, and land-sliding in the west, and land-sliding in the peninsula of Arabia, the smoke, the Dajjal, the beast of the earth, Gog and Magog, the rising of the sun from the west and the fire which would emit from the lower part of 'Adan. Shu'ba said that 'Abd al-'Aziz b. Rufai' reported on the authority of Abu Tufail who reported on the authority of Abu Sariha a hadith like this that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) did not make a mention of (the tenth sign) but he said that out of the ten one was the descent of Jesus Christ, son of Mary (peace be upon him), and in another version it is theb lowing of the violent gale which would drive the people to the ocean.
Book 041, Number 6933:

Abu Sariha reported: Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) was in an (upper) apartment and we were standing lower to him and discussing (about the Last Hour). The rest of the hadith is the same, and Shu'ba said: I think he also said these words: The fire would descend along with them where they would land and where they would take rest (during midday (it would also cool down for a while). Shu'ba said: This hadith has been transmitted to me through Abu Tufail and Abu Sariha and none could trace it back directly to Allah's Apostle (may peace b.. upon him). However, there is a mention of the descent of Jesus Christ son of Mary in one version and in the other there is a mention of the blowing of a violent would drive them to the ocean.
Book 041, Number 6934:

Abu Sariha reported: We were discussing the Last Hour) that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) looked towards us. The rest of the hadith is the same and the tenth (sign) was the descent of Jesus Christ son of Mary, and Shu'ba said: 'Abd al-'Aziz did not trace it directly to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him).

Hudhalfa reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Dajjal is blind of left eye with thick hair and there would be a garden and fire with him and his fire would be a garden and his garden would be fire.
Book 041, Number 7011:

Hudhaifa reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: the Dajjal would have with him water and fire and his fire would bays the effect of cold water and his water would have the effect of fire, so don't put yourself to ruin. Abu Mas'ud reported: I also heard it from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him).
Book 041, Number 7012:

'Uqba b. 'Amr Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari reported: I went to Hudhaifa b. Yaman and said to him: Narrate what you have heard from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) pertaining to the Dajjal. He said that the Dajjal would appear and there would be along with him water ant fire and what the people would see as water that would be fire and that would burn and what would appear as fire that would be water and any one of you who would see that should plunge in that which he sees as fire for it would be sweet, pure water, and 'Uqba said: I also heard it, testifying Hudhaifa.
Book 041, Number 7013:

Hudhaifa and Ibn Mas'ud met together. Hudhaifa said: I know more than you as to what there would be along with the Dajjal. There would be along with him two canals (one flowing with water) and the other one (having) fire (within it), and what you would see as fire would be water and what you would see as water would be fire. So he who amongst you is able to see that and is desirous of water should drink out of that which he sees as fire.
Book 041, Number 7014:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: May I not inform you about the Dajjal what no Apostle of Allah narrated to his people? He would be blind and he would bring along with him an Image of Paradise and Hell-Fire and what he would call as Paradise that would be Hell-Fire and I warn you as Noah warned his people.
Book 041, Number 7015:

An-Nawwas b. Sam'an reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) made a mention of the Dajjal one day in the morning. He sometimes described him to be insignificant and sometimes described (his turmoil) as very significant rand we felt) as if he were in the cluster of the date-palm trees. When we went to him (to the Holy Prophet) in the evening and he read (the signs of fear) in our faces, he said: What is the matter with you? We said: Allah's Messenger, you made a mention of the Dajjal in the morning (sometimes describing him) to be insignificant and sometimes very important, until we began to think as if he were present in some (near) part of the cluster of the datpalm trees. Thereupon he said: I harbour fear in regard to you in so many other things besides the Dajjal. If he comes forth while I am among on, I shall contend with him on your behalf, but if he comes forth while I am not amongst you, a man must contend on his own behalf and Allah would take care of every Muslim on my behalf (and safeguard him against his evil). He (Dajjal) would be a young man with twisted, contracted hair, and a blind eye. I compare him to 'Abd-ul-'Uzza b. Qatan. He who amongst you would survive to see him should recite over him the opening verses of Sura Kahf (xviii.). He would appear on the way between Syria and Iraq and would spread mischief right and left. O servant of Allah! adhere (to the path of Truth). We said: Allah's Messenger, how long would he stay on the earth? He said.. For forty days, one day like a year and one day like a month and one day like a week and the rest of the days would be like your days. We said: Allah's Messenger, would one day's prayer suffice for the prayers of day equal to one year? Thereupon he said: No, but you must make an estimate of time (and then observe prayer). We said: Allah's Messenger, how quickly would he walk upon the earth? Thereupon he said: Like cloud driven by the wind. He would come to the people and invite them (to a wrong religion) and they would affirm their faith in him and respond to him. He would then give command to the sky and there would be rainfall upon the earth and it would grow crops. Then in the evening, their posturing animals would come to them with their humps very high and their udders full of milk and their flanks stretched. He would then come to another people and invite them. But they would reject him and he would go away from them and there would be drought for them and nothing would be lef t with them in the form of wealth.

He would then walk through the waste, land and say to it: Bring forth your treasures, and the treasures would come out and collect (themselves) before him like the swarm of bees. He would then call a person brimming with youth and strike him with the sword and cut him into two pieces and (make these pieces lie at a distance which is generally) between the archer and his target. He would then call (that young man) and he will come forward laughing with his face gleaming (with happiness) and it would at this very time that Allah would send Christ, son of Mary, and he will descend at the white minaret in the eastern side of Damscus wearing two garments lightly dyed with saffron and placing his hands on the wings of two Angels. When he would lower his head, there would fall beads of perspiration from his head, and when he would raise it up, beads like pearls would scatter from it. Every non-believer who would smell the odour of his self would die and his breath would reach as far as he would be able to see. He would then search for him (Dajjal) until he would catch hold of him at the gate of Ludd and would kill him. Then a people whom Allah had protected would come to Jesus, son of Mary, and he would wipe their faces and would inform them of their ranks in Paradise and it would be under such conditions that Allah would reveal to Jesus these words: I have brought forth from amongst My servants such people against whom none would be able to fight; you take these people safely to Tur, and then Allah would send Gog and Magog and they would swarm down from every slope. The first of them would pass the lake of Tibering and drink out of it. And when the last of them would pass, he would say: There was once water there. Jesus and his companions would then be besieged here (at Tur, and they would be so much hard pressed) that the head of the ox would be dearer to them than one hundred dinirs and Allah's Apostle, Jesus, and his companions would supplicate Allah, Who would send to them insects (which would attack their necks) and in the morning they would perish like one single person. Allah's Apostle, Jesus, and his companions would then come down to the earth and they would not find in the earth as much space as a single span which is not filled with their putrefaction and stench. Allah's Apostle, Jesus, and his companions would then again beseech Allah, Who would send birds whose necks would be like those of bactrin camels and they would carry them and throw them where God would will.

Then Allah would send rain which no house of clay or (the tent of) camels' hairs would keep out and it would wash away the earth until it could appear to be a mirror. Then the earth would be told to bring forth its fruit and restore its blessing and, as a result thereof, there would grow (such a big) pomegranate that a group of persons would be able to eat that, and seek shelter under its skin and milch cow would give so much milk that a whole party would be able to drink it. And the milch camel would give such (a large quantity of) milk that the whole tribe would be able to drink out of that and the milch sheep would give so much milk that the whole family would be able to drink out of that and at that time Allah would send a pleasant wind which would soothe (people) even under their armpits, and would take the life of every Muslim and only the wicked would survive who would commit adultery like asses and the Last Hour would come to them.
Book 041, Number 7016:

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Jabir with the same chain of transmitters but with this addition that Gog and Magog would walk until they would reach the mountain of al-Khamar and it is a mountain of Bait-ul-Maqdis and they would say: We have killed those who are upon the earth. Let us now kill those who are In the sky and they would throw their arrows towards the sky and the arrows would return to them besmeared with blood. And in the narration of Ibn Hujr (the words are):" I have sent such persons (Gog and Magog) that none would dare fight against them.

Chapter 19: THE CHARACTERISTIC OF THE DAJJAL AND A BAN ON HIS ENTRY TO MEDINA AND HIS KILLING OF A BELIEVER AND THEN RESTORING HIM TO LIFE
Book 041, Number 7017:

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) one day gave a detailed account of the Dajjal and in that it was also included: He would come but would not be allowed to ether the mountain passes to Medina. So he will alight at some of the barren tracts near Medina, and a person who would be the best of men or one from amongst the best of men would say to him: I bear testimony to the fact that you are Dajjal about whom Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) had informed us. The Dajjal would say: What is your opinion if I kill this (person), then I bring him back to life; even then will you harbour doubt in this matter? They would say: No. He would then kill (the man) and then bring him back to life. When he would bring tha@ person to life, he would say: By Allah, I had no better proof of the fact (that you are a Dajjal) than at the present time (that you are actually so). The Dajjal would then make an attempt to kill him (again) but he would not be able to do that. Abu Ishaq reported that it was said: That person would be Khadir (Allah be pleased with him).
Book 041, Number 7018:

This hadith has been narrated by Zuhri with the same chain of transmitters.
Book 041, Number 7019:

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The Dajjal would come forth and a person from amongst the believers would go towards him and the armed men of the Dajjal would meet him and they would say to him: Where do you intend to go? He would say: I intend to go to this one who is coming forth. They would say to him: Don't you believe in our Lord? He would say: There is nothing hidden about our Lord. They would say: Kill him. Then some amongst them would say: Has your master (Dajjal) not forbidden you to kill anyone without (his consent)? And so they would take him to the Dajjal and when the believer would see him, he would say: O people. he is the Dajjil about whom Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) has informed (us). The Dajjal would then order for breaking his head and utter (these words): Catch hold of him and break his head. He would be struck even on his back and on his stomach. Then the Dajjal would ask him: Don't you believe in me? He would say: You are a false Masih. He would then order him to be torn (into pieces) with a saw from the parting of his hair up to his legs. After that the Dajjal would walk between the two pieces. He would then say to him: Stand, and he would stand erect. He would then say to him: Don't you believe in me? And the person would say: It has only added to my insight concerning you (that you are really the Dajjal). He would then say: O people, he would not behave with anyone amongst people (in such a manner) after me. The Dajjal would try to catch hold of him so that he should kill him (again). The space between his neck and collar bone would be turned into copper and he would find no means to kill him. So he would catch hold of him by his hand and feet and throw him (into the air) and the people would think as if he had been thrown in the Hell-Fire whereas he would be thrown in Paradise. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: He would be the most eminent amongst persons in regard to martyrdom in the eye of the Lord of the world.

Chapter 20: THE DAJJAL WOULD BE VERY INSIGNIFICANT IN THE EYE OF ALLAH, THE MAJESTIC AND GLORIOUS
Book 041, Number 7020:

Mughira b. Shu'ba reported: No one asked Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) more about Dajjil than I asked him. He said: He should not be a source of worry to you for he would not be able to do any harm to you. I said: Allah's Messenger, it is alleged that he would have along with him (abundance of) food and water. Thereupon he said: He would be very insignificant in the eye of Allah (even) with all this.
Book 041, Number 7021:

Mughira b. Shu'ba reported that none asked Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) about Dajjal more than I asked him. I (one of the narrators other than Mughlra b. Shu'ba) said: What'did you ask? Mughira replied: I said that the people alleged that he would have a mountain load of bread and mutton and rivers of water. Thereupon he said: He would be more insignificant in the eye of Allah compared with all this.
Book 041, Number 7022:

This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Isma'il through other chains of transmitters with a slight variation of wording.

Chapter 21: THE APPEARANCE OF THE DAJJAL AND HIS STAY UPON THE EARTH AND THE DESCENT OF JESUS AND HIS KILLING HIM (DAJJAL) AND THE DEPARTURE OF GOOD PEOPLE OF STRONG CONVICTION AND THE SURVIVAL OF THE WICKED PEOPLE AND THE WORSHIP OF IDOLS AND THE BLOWING OF THE TRUMPET AND THE RAISING UP FROM THE GRAVES
Book 041, Number 7023:

'Abdullah b. 'Amr reported that a person came to him and said: What is this hadith that you narrate that the Last Hour would come at such and such time? Thereupon he said: Hallowed be Allah, there is no god but Allah (or the words to the same effect). I have decided that I would not narrate anything to anyone now. I had only said that you would see after some time an important event that the (sacred) House (Ka'ba) would be burnt and it would happen and definitely happen. He then reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: The Dajjal would appear in my Ummah and he would stay (in the world) for forty-I cannot say whether he meant forty days, forty months or forty years. And Allah would then send Jesus son of Mary who would resemble 'Urwa b Mas'ud. He (Jesus Christ) would chase him and kill him. Then people would live for seven years that there would be no ran. cour between two persons. Then Allah would send cold wind from the side of Syria that none would survive upon the earth having a speck of good in him or faith in him but he would die, so much so that even if some amongst you were to enter the innermost part of the mountain, this wind would reach that place also and that would cause his heath. I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Only the wicked people would survive and they would be as careless as birds with the charactertistics of beasts. They would never appreciate the good nor condemn evil. Then the Satan would come to them in human form and would say: Don't you respond? And they would say: What do you order us? And he would command them to worship the idols but, in spite of this, they would have abundance of sustenance and lead comfortable lives. Then the trumpet would be blown and no one would hear that but he would bend hfs neck to one side and raise it from the other side and the first one to hear that trumpet would be the person who would be busy in setting right the tank meant for providing water to the camels. He would swoon and the other people would also swoon, then Allah would send or He would cause to send rain which would be like dew and there would grow out of it the bodies of the people. Then the second trumpet would be blown and they would stand up and begin to look (around). Then it would be said: O people, go to your Lord, and make them stand there. And they would be questioned. Then it would be said: Bring out a group (out of them) for the Hell-Fire. And then it would be asked: How much? It would be said: Nine hundred and ninty-nine out of one thousand for the Hell-Fire and that would be the day which would make the children old because of its terror and that would be the day about which it has been said:" On the day when the shank would be uncovered" (lxviii. 42).
Book 041, Number 7024:

Ya'qub b. 'Asim b. Urwa b. Mas'ud reported: I heard a person saying to 'Abdullah b. Amr: You say that the Last Hour would come at such and such time, whereupon he said: I had made up my mind that I would not narrate anything to you. I only said: But you would soon see after some time a very significant affair, for example the burning of the House (Ka'ba). Shu'ba said like this and 'Abdullah b Amr reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) having said: The Dajjal would appear in my Ummah. And in another hadith (the words are): None would survive who would have even a speck of faith in his heart, but he would be dead. Muhammad b. ja'far reported that Shu'ba narrated to him this hadith many a time and I also read it out to him many a time.
Book 041, Number 7025:

Abdullah b. 'Amr reported: I committed to memory a hadith from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and I did not forget it after I had heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The first sign (nut of the signs of the appearance of the Dajjal) would be the appearance of the sun from the west, the appearance of the beast before the people in the forenoon and whkch of the two hap- pens first, the second one would follow immediately after that.
Book 041, Number 7026:

Abu Zur'a reported that three persons amongst Muslims had been sitting in Medina in the presence of Marwan b. Hakam and they heard him narrate these signs from him and the first amongst them was the appearance of the Dajjal. 'Abdullah b. 'Amr reported that Marwin said nothing (particular in this connection). I, however, heard a hadith from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and I did not forget that after I had heard that from Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and he reported a hadith like the foregoing.
Book 041, Number 7027:

Abu Zur'a reported that there was a discussion in the presence of Marwan about the Last Hour, and Abdullah b. 'Amr said: I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying. The rest of the hadith is the same, but there is no mention of forenoon.

Chapter 22: THE HADITH PERTAINING TO THE SPY OF THE DAJJAL
Book 041, Number 7028:

Amir b. Sharahil Sha'bi Sha'b Hamdan reported that he asked Fatima, daughter of Qais and sister of ad-Dahhak b. Qais and she was the first amongst the emigrant women: Narrate to me a hadith which you had heard directly from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and there is no extra link in between them. She said: Very well, if you like, I am prepared to do that, and he said to her: Well, do It and narrate that to me. She said: I married the son of Mughira and he was a chosen young man of Quraish at that time, but he fell as a martyr in the first Jihad (fighting) on the side of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). When I became a widow, 'Abd al-Rahman b. Auf, one amongst the group of the Companions of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him), sent me the proposal of marriage. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) also sent me such a message for his freed slave Usama b. Zaid. And it had been conveyed to me that Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him) had said (about Usama): He who loves me should also love Usima. When Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) talked to me (about this matter), I said: My affairs are in your hand. You may marry me to anyone whom you like. He said: You better shift now to the house of Umm Sharik, and Umm Sharik was a rich lady from amongst the Anqir. She spent generously for the cause of Allah and entertained guests very hospitably. I said: Well, I will do as you like. He said: Do not do that for Umm Sharik is a woman who is very frequently vizited by guests and I do not like that your head may be uncovered or the cloth may be removed from your shank and the strangers may catch sight of them which you abhor. You better shift to the house of your cousin 'Abdullah b. 'Amr b. Umm Maktum and he is a person of the Bani Fihr branch of the Quraish, and he belonged to that tribe (to which Fatima) belonged. So I shifted to that house, and when my period of waiting was over, I heard the voice of an announcer making an announcement that the prayer would be observed in the mosque (where) congregational prayer (is observed).

So I set out towards that mosque and observed prayer along with Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and I was in the row of the women which was near the row of men. When Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) had finished his prayer, he sat on the pulpit smiling and said: Every worshipper should keep sitting at his place. He then said: Do you know why I had asked you to assemble? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: By Allah. I have not made you assemble for exhortation or for a warning, but I have detained you here, for Tamim Dari, a Christian, who came and accepted Islam, told me something, which agrees with what I was-telling, yuu about the Dajjal. He narrated to me that he had sailed in a ship along with thirty men of Bani Lakhm and Bani Judham and had been tossed by waves in the ocean for a month. Then these (waves) took them (near) the land within the ocean (island) at the time of sunset. They sat in a small side-boat and entered that Island. There was a beast with long thick hair (and because of these) they could not distinguish his face from his back. They said: Woe to you, who can you be? Thereupon it said: I am al-Jassasa. They said: What is al-Jassasa? And it said: O people, go to this person in the monastery as he is very much eager to know about you. He (the narrator) said: When it named a person for us we were afraid of it lest it should be a Devil. Then we hurriedly went on till we came to that monastery and found a well-built person there with his hands tied to his neck and having iron shackles between his two legs up to the ankles. We said: Woe be upon thee, who are you? And he said: You would soon come to know about me. but tell me who are you. We said: We are people from Arabia and we embarked upon a boat but the sea-waves had been driving us for one month and they brought as near this island. We got Into the side-boats and entered this island and here a beast met us with profusely thick hair and because of the thickness of his hair his face could not be distinguished from his back. We said: Woe be to thee, who are you? It said: I am al- Jassasa. We said: What is al-Jassasa? And it said: You go to this very person in the monastery for he is eagerly waiting for you to know about you. So we came to you in hot haste fearing that that might be the Devil. He (that chained person) said: Tell me about the date-palm trees of Baisan. We &aid: About what aspect of theirs do you seek information? He said: I ask you whether these trees bear fruit or not.

We said: Yes Thereupon he said: I think these would not bear fruits. He said: Inform me about the lake of Tabariyya? We said: Which aspect of it do you want to know? He said: Is there water in it? They said: There is abundance of water in it. Thereupon he said: I think it would soon become dry. He again said: Inform me about the spring of Zughar. They said: Which aspect of it you want to know? He (the chained person) said: Is there water in it and does it irrigate (the land)? We said to him: Yes, there is abundance of water in it and the inhabitants (of Medina) irrigate (land) with the help of it, He said: Inform me about the unlettered Prophet; what has he done? We said: He has come out from Mecca and has settled In Yathrib (Medina). He said: Do the Arabs fight against him? We said: Yes. He said: How did he deal with him? We informed him that he had overcome those in his neighbourhood and they had submitted themselves before him. Thereupon he said to us: Had it actually happened? We said: Yes. Thereupon he said: If it is so that is better for them that they should show obedience to him. I am going to tell you about. myself and I am Dajjal and would be soon permitted to get out and so I shall get out and travel in the land, and will not spare any town where I would not stay for forty nights except Mecca and Medina as these two (places) are prohibited (areas) for me and I would not make an attempt to enter any one of these two. An angel with a sword in his hand would confront me and would bar my way and there would be angels to guard every passage leading to it; then Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) striking the pulpit with the help of the end of his staff said: This implies Taiba meaning Medina. Have I not, told you an account (of the Dajjal) like this? 'The people said: Yes, and this account narrated by Tamim Dari was liked by me for it corroborates the account which I gave to you in regard to him (Dajjal) at Medina and Mecca. Behold he (Dajjal) is in the Syrian sea (Mediterranian) or the Yemen sea (Arabian sea). Nay, on the contrary, he As In the east, he is in the east, he is in the east, and he pointed with his hand towards the east. I (Fatima bint Qais) said: I preserved It In my mind (this narration from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him).
Book 041, Number 7029:

Al-Sha'bi reported: We visited Fatima b. Qais and she served us fresh dates which are called rutab and she also served us barley. I asked her about that woman in whose case three divorces had been pronounced as to how much time she should count as the waiting period. She said: My husband pronounced three divorces in my case and Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) permitted me to spend any waiting period in my family. (It was during this period) that announcement was made for the people to observe prayer in the bigger Mosque. I went there along with people and I was in the front row meant for women and it was adjacent to the last row of men and I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) deliver sermon sitting on the pulpit. He said: The cousin of Tamim (Dari) sailed in the ocean. The rest of the hadith is the same but with this addition:" (I see) as if I am looking to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) pointing his rod towards the land (and saying): It is Taiba, i. e. Medina."
Book 041, Number 7030:

Tamim Dari came to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and informed Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) that he sailed in an ocean and his ship lost direction and thus landed at an island. They moved about in that land in search of water. There they saw a person who had been pulling his hair. The rest of the hadith is the same. And he (Dajjal) said: If I were to be permitted to set out I would have covered all the lands except Taiba. Then Allah's Messerger (may peace be upon him) brought (Tamim Dari) before the public and he narrated to them and said: That is Taiba and that is the Dajjal.
Book 041, Number 7031:

Fatima b. Qais reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) sat on the pulpit and said: O people, Tamim Dari has reported to me that some persons of his tribe sailed in the ocean in a boat and it capsised and then some of them travelled on one of the planks of the boat and they went to an island in the ocean. The rest of the hadith is the same.
Book 041, Number 7032:

Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: There will be no land which would not be covered by the Dajjal but Mecca and Medina, and there would no passage out of the passages leading to them which would not be guarded by angels arranged in rows. Then he (the Dajjal) would appear in a barren place adjacent to Medina and it would rock three times that every unbeliever and hypocrite would get out of it towards him.
Book 041, Number 7033:

This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Anas that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said this but with this addition that (the Dajjal would come) and pitch his tent in the waste-land of Juruf and thus there would come out of (the city) every hypocrite, man and woman.

I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: There would be no creation (creating more trouble) than the Dajjal right from the creation of Adam to the Last Hour.

Book 041, Number 7040:

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Hasten in performing these good deeds (before these) six things (happen): (the appearance) of tribe Dijjal, the smoke, the beast of the earth, the rising of the sun from the west, the general turmoil (leadina to large-scale massacre) and death of masses and individuals.
